Ads ruining the Straight Dope.

Yeah, I tried logging out then accessing the board on my iPad and had no problem with Chrome or Safari.

We don’t knowingly run any ads that cover a third of the screen. If you can send a screen shot of this ad to webmaster at straightdope dot com, we’ll investigate.

There shouldn’t be any popups either. Please send a screen shot of this ad to webmaster at straightdope dot com. (Click both iPad buttons simultaneously to make a screen shot.) We’ll investigate. -Ed

Considering the problems this board has had with malware in the past, I certainly wouldn’t trust it. It’s not a knock at the straight dope, but a fact. (Quite frankly, I don’t go on ANY site without adblockers, I learned that the hardway. Unless they’re willing to use their revenue to buy me a new computer if mine gets trashed like my last one did, too bad)
And the argument that, “well, then why don’t you buy a membership?”, well, like I’ve said before, that’s kind of a shitty business model. Buy a membership, or possibly be infected with malware? Yeah.

(I only kept mine up while you needed one to use the search engine, then after awhile I just let it lapse)

Maybe I missed a mention of this solution during prior discussion(s) - but has the Dope considered being proactive by getting a third party to monitor the site daily for vulnerabilities/malware, i.e. displaying a seal from McAfee Secure?

Given the current level of distrust of ads on the site (not to mention the site itself), such a step seems like a good idea.

I think CrazyHorse identified the exact malware causing this issue in his link post #13.

Yeah, I don’t know what ads you guys are running, but look what they’ve done to my browser.

Yup, loud obnoxious ads that drown out whatever I’m listening to in the background blows goats.

It is enough that I’m considering leaving the Dope altogether - not that many would notice :).

Seriously I used to look at the ads and sometimes click on them - in the spirit of support - but now I’m thinking of just saying “screw it, it’s not worth it.”

tldr; loud, non-mutable ads, fucking suck.

Get Adblock. Seriously, it does away with all that shit.

Dude, no. Never click on internet ads. It’s like playing Russian Roulette. NEVER click on internet ads.

Except for the “Horny Housewives in Your Area Want To Meat” ads.

Right?

They’re OK.

Entirely possible. I’ve been reading the board using Atomic’s browser since it started and that’s given me no trouble.

It’s sending you pictures of washed up rappers? Are you sure you’re not on buzzfeed?

36 Mind-Blowing Pictures of Washed-Up Rappers!

And any ad claiming “this one weird trick” to solve a common problem, those are totally legit, but skip everything else.

I always click to learn more about those poor people unfairly hated by plastic surgeons/trainers/dermatologists/ducks.

I have this one weird trick to finding out all the other weird tricks without paying for them. Those other weird trick people hate me!

I used to spend a decent amount of time around rappers.

Some of them, yeah, they could use a good washing up. A change of clothing wouldn’t hurt either.

Any updates? Did trying anything from Crazyhorse’s link help?

This is a big issue with ads on iOS. I’ve posted a thread on it. I recently found a solution - in Settings, General, Restrictions, restrict the iTunes Store.

Check out this post I made about the iCab browser. I used it 15 or 20 years ago on my desktop machine when it was the only browser I knew of that would block ads. Then the first Adblock came along for Netscape, which morphed into Firefox and Adblock Plus, and which was far easier.

Now iCab for the iPad uses Adblock Plus.

You can also change iCab’s identity to any number of desktop browsers, which turns off a slew of iPad popups, and it has a switch to turn on automatic enlargement of type.
