Adults roller skating, weird or OK?

Me and a friend of mine want to go roller skating. We both used to be roller skate rink rats as kids, and though it has been quite a while since either of us has been skating, we really want to go.

If you were at the roller skating rink with your kids, would you think it strange that 2 women in their early 30’s are at the rink with no kids.

I just don’t want people to think we are weird. We just wanna roller skate!

I’d think at the roller rink would be a little weird. That’s kind of a young thing, like teenagers or younger.

But can’t you pick up a cheap pair of rollerblades and go to a park or something? That’s definitely an “all ages” type of thing.

I’m female and 36 and I’d love to go to the rink with you.

Except, last couple of times I went I fell so hard I’m kind of scared. The first time was to avoid a little kid, the second time my skate hit someone’s false fingernail that had fallen on the floor. I don’t see any way to keep that kind of stuff from happening and I really don’t want to break my ass!

So, not for me…but more power to you.

Just go and skate already. Who cares what teenagers think of you?

The thing is if they were used to skating on a smooth surface at a rink it’s going to be a lot different than skating on paths at a park. If you’re just taking it up again, I’d start out at the rink first then work your way to the park.

Neither of us are into the inline skates plus with a lack of parks here would make that hard. Also the last time I tried inline skates, I ended up with a sprained (strained?) wrist and bloodied palms and knees. Regular skates- I’m grace on wheels  who’s idea was it to put the stopper in the back!

When I was a kid and went to the roller rink, there were adults there skating with no apparent kids in tow (of course this was the 80’s), but I don’t remember having any weird thoughts about it either way. I was too busy having fun.

We are a bit worried about that, but hey! That’s what insurance is for- I kid… I do not like the idea of hurting myself, but I figure I put myself at a greater risk while mountain biking.

I wouldn’t consider it strange either. I know some adult women who are involved with Roller Derby so I might just think you were practicing for that.

Jeez, lady, you’re 36! Stop caring what anybody thinks of you!

Can I come with you?

The roller rink near me has theme days- gospel music night, country night, etc., and at least one of these theme nights is adults only, so I would assume that a lot of adults only go- check and see if your rink has adults only nights if you don’t want to be around a bunch of teenyboppers.

I was under the impression that one of the cooler things about being an adult was that it meant you didn’t have to care what people think about you.

The last time I was at a roller rink I had to have been 11 years-old, so that was around 99/00, and I do remember seeing some adults skating by themselves. My friend’s mom used to. Just do it. It’ll be fun.

at least one in Las Vegas has an adults only day- 9 to 11 a.m. unfortunately- I’m sure others have an adults night:

hahahahahahaha!

I have no idea who this would appeal to- really old people ??

I just saw that on the web page for the skate rink… crappy hours too. We were wanting to go this afternoon. I also realized that Las Vegas has more ice skating rinks (indoors of course) than roller rinks. Weird.

To hijack my own thread: Is roller skating a “dying” past time?

There are SERIOUS adult skating organizations out there. One of many groups promoting adult skating

I just checked their schedule: There are 8 events left in April, an awards skate party in May - people come from all over the country to the skatathons.

Besides - you’re too old to worry about being weird. Old people ARE weird.

Very true! One of the good things about getting older is you stop worring about what other people think.

Well, if you put on a tight top and flirted with the high school boys, that would weird. But otherwise, no. Can I come too?

I’m 50 and took my 10 year old granddaughters roller skating a few months ago. I hadn’t skated in years and like others, use to skate all the time when I was a teenager. Once I got on the floor it was just like riding a bike. Except with much slower reaction times. I tripped and fell a few times and after a few laps around the rink I needed a minute to catch my breath. I was able to impress some of the younger ladies enough to be very popular during the pairs skate, I was one of the few guy there able to skate backwards. By the end of the night I had a good time except for the sore butt, knees, ankles, etc. The only thing I didn’t care for was the selection of music played, rap music and skating do not go together.

There were some women there about your age and I don’t think anyone thought is was weird. Weird was the 50 year old fat guy in the Led Zeppelin t-shirt and graying hair that had a bunch of pre-teen through early 20’s girls pulling him out on the floor to skate.

Seriously, those kids are going to think you’re dorky and weird whether they see at the skating rink or in the grocery store. Get over it!

If any adults are there, they’ll either be skating themselves or (if they’re just watching their own kids from the sidelines) jealous that you’re still confident and in-shape enough to go out there, however dorky you might look.

Oh man I would give anything for the chance to roller skate now. I did competetive roller skating when I was a kid, and although I was never all that great at it and have certainly lost my touch, roller skating brings back a lot of good memories and is one of the few athletic activities I am better-than-average in.

Go! Have fun!

I see lots of adults at the rink. You may want to check to see if they have an adult skate time. It’s a real drag to have those little shits whizzin’ by at warp speed while you’re trying to glide along at geezer speed.

I used to skake with my son a lot! He was probably 5 or 6 years old. We had little routines where he’d skate under my legs, etc. It was a blast.

I used to live near a roller rink. On weeknights they had grown-up times scheduled. I think you had to be 21+. When my roommate and I went most of the women there seemed to be mid-40s. We were late 20s and there were a few guys there who looked 60+ (and were doing awesome tricks on their old skates).

If there’s a rink in town, check to see what kind of scheduling they have. Most of the teenagers/kids times are slated for the weekends.
