I just started playing AQ3D; anyone else here play?
First of all, it’s free-to-play. Yes, there are in-game purchases but they seem to be cosmetic and not stuff that affects gameplay.
Second, the game can be played on any platform or OS. I’ve played on my 2008 Mac Pro desktop, on my 2016 Macbook Pro and on my iPhone 11 Max, for instance.
The game is an MMORPG. A very old school MMORPG. It’s as if someone took the old EverQuest engine and updated the graphics to look more like WoW.
There is, somehow, a story tho.
When you create a character you choose a class: warrior, rogue or mage. (Eventually you unlock the other two classes as well as another 8 or so different, more refined classes.)
When you start the game there is a brief cutscene (the game loves cutscenes, btw) where you learn that you are dead and Death is now inviting you to become his champion so that you can defeat a villain name Vane. But first, you have to grow strong and learn skills and stuff, so out into the world you go!
And then you appear in the town of Battleon, where you can get quests, buy stuff, learn crafting, etc. All the stuff you’d expect in an MMORPG.
I’ve got about 15 hours in the game right now. I think I’ve done of the like 20 tasks you have to do to open up the endgame, but I’m not in a hurry. It’s fun running around doing quests and seeing how the various storylines progress.
REALLY awesome zoning in to places again. I’ve missed that since I stopped playing EQ back in '04.
And this game is at times kind of grind-y; I like that. It makes it feel like those faction rewards or whatever are really worth something.
There are dungeons/instances which you enter privately or publicly (random people can enter the same dungeon and help you kill stuff). There are world bosses. There are special events every day. One of them right now is a Breaking Benjamin concert with various mobs to kill and rewards to be had; apparently last fall it was Korn.
The game has an excellent sense of humor, too. It doesn’t take itself very seriously, somehow, yet it never reaches stupid or farcical.
I may eventually spend $20 on the Guardian class upgrade in lieu of the game having an actual purchase price; I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen so far and have been having a lot of fun.
Anyone else play AQ3D?
