The thread has kind of morphed into forgotten food nightmares, but mine is a little different.
Years ago I smelled the death smell. I tracked it to a cupboard. I found a can of cat food covered in maggots. Apparently, it had a hole in it (I didn’t investigate it too thoroughly). I threw out everything in that cupboard. God, I haven’t thought about that in years. Thanks for the memory.
My Mom has 2 vehicles. one being her dailiy drver and one being a pickup for occasional use. I went over to borrow the truck one day last summer. AsI opened the driver door a rancid smell hit me full lin the face and literally made me step back 2-3 paces. Turns out Mom had decided on a whim to drive the truck to the grocery store. A package of fresh fis somehow fell under the seat and didn’t get taken in. By the time I opened the door it had been in the truck for 3-4 days in the hot Georgia sun. Cleanup was easy, as it was still in the wrapping paaper but I had to keep the windows down for a week to clear out the smell.
Another milk story. I had put a jug of milk on the back floormat of my 2-seat car and unknown to me, some had spilled. Fast-forward a week or 2 later in the hot summer sun and my car smelled really bad!
That’s exactly what happened. We all stood around and waited for him to open the door.
Back when I was a young teen and didn’t know any better, I wrapped up an opened tin of sardines in foil and stuck it in my bottom dresser drawer. When I finally remembered them and thought “Ooh, a snack!”, and unwrapped them, it was a sight that is the stuff of nightmares. I quickly schlepped them out the back door to the garbage bin before my mother caught a whiff. Good lesson, though.
