Adventures In Stupidland 2-New for 2005: Street Crossing 101

For the past few years I have been trying to convince myself that it’s not Memphis that is so horrible–it’s this bad everywhere. Of course, avoiding most local newscasts has helped me to delude myself.

Now this.

CHRIST, YOU ARE FUCKING COLLEGE STUDENTS WHY THE FUCK CAN YOU NOT FUCKING CROSS THE STREET WITHOUT GETTING RUN OVER???!?!??!?!?!

It is just so typical for this hellhole.

My favorite part is how they are planning to lower the street so that it will be even with the starting point of the crosswalk. We wouldn’t want these poor, poor students to have to…you know…climb steps or anything.

I have lived most of my life without access to a vehicle. I am used to crossing the very busy streets in this city-including the one mentioned. I have never come CLOSE to getting run over. Maybe it’s because when I am crossing the street I pay attention to the drivers (who are notoriously awful here) and not talk on MY FUCKING CELL PHONE.

arghhhhgghhhh.

Anybody here that lives in a real city: can I move in? I’ll…uh…water your plants! ;j

Come on up if you’re into nosebleeds, dry skin, bitchin’ outdoor concerts and brews micro & macro.

But ya can’t water the plants cuz there’s a drought. :frowning:

I’m not really interested in registering to read that link.

But yeah, college students everywhere act like they own the street. Back when the University of Texas at Austin allowed through traffic on Speedway (two lane street right through the heart of campus), the only way I could get through the place sometimes was to just idle through at 2mph and watch the hood of my truck slowly part through the sea of students.

I guess old-fashioned bridges are out of fashion since they need to have 2 elevators to be ADA compliant. Or a big-ass ramp.

Still seems extreme. Couldn’t they put up a traffic light?

I appreciate it Jeff. I didn’t realize you would have to register. Sorrys.

You know ** Inigo **, I always thought that I might wanna live in Denver…but, if I can’t water somebody’s plants…then there’s no change of happiness for me.

SmackFu, there is a light up. But, yeah, put up another light…put another 10 lights up…just don’t spend millions of dollars to keep people from getting run over.

I think they should get a crossing guard…you know…like in elementary school .

Oh and change=chance in that post before my last.

Semi-related:

In my former hometown of Plattsburgh, NY, there were a few too many incidents one year of students from the local SUNY getting hit while crossing intersections. The local government responded by lauching a massive (for P’burgh) public-information campaign reminding people that pedestrians have the right of way at stoplights.

A couple more incidents which followed immediately thereafter forced the college to launch a similar campaign, this one reminding the students that the rule only applied if the light in question was red at the time…

Heh. Tell me about it. Most of the people I’ve seen nearly get hit on that stretch of street have been clueless pedestrians, and it would have been their fault they got hit. (Kinda hard for a driver who’s doing more than 1 or 2 mph to react to someone who steps out right in front of them, even if they are being paranoid about what the pedestrian intends to do.)

And I’m betting that they’ll screw up the drainage if they do lower the road, so that then they’ll be getting complaints about the swimming pool that forms every time it rains.

IMO, they should do something about the railroad crossing on the opposite side of campus on Southern Ave. first: that one is so bad, I refuse to go near it (on foot or by car) if I know there will be traffic there. At least on Central you can generally see where the traffic is (car and foot) and semi-anticipate stuff.

<< Help Desk: We read the manual for you. >>

We have a bit of a jaywalking problem here; there are several campuses (campii?) with buildings on both sides of the street, and students just walk straight from one to the other (Macalaster students, I’m lookin’ at you!).

We have signs up now in the middle of the block which read, “Pedestrians crossing here DO NOT have the right of way”.

Still doesn’t mean we can mow them down, dadgummit.

As a crossing guard, I would DREAD working at a College campus…middle school kids are smarmy enough as it is, and just this past year there have been many crossing guards who get beaten by angry pedestrians/drivers simply for doing their job

I’d only do it if they let me carry a firearm.
