Advice for freelance writer/editor

For the past 2 years, my husband has been doing freelance and writing and editing, after being an editor of law books for a number of years. His main source of income these days has just cut back dramatically on its freelance budget (definitely a trend, I know) and he needs to find more magazines/newspapers who need freelancers. The problem is that he’s not sure exactly how to go about finding more organizations he can pitch stories to.

So, for those of you who are freelancing or who use freelancers, where should he go to find media organizations to pitch to? He does mostly legal and technology stories, but he’s also interested in general interest stories. He’s tried pitching stories a number of places, but it’s tough to get a foot in the door. Suggestions would be most welcome.

Do you have a Writer’s Market Guide?

Yeah, he checked the Writer’s Market Guide at the library.

Your state probably has a state press association and if he becomes a member or associate member, he probably can have that excellent source of magazines, newspapers and the like who do indeed use freelancers.

Not “probably”. I just looked it up. The webpage for the New Jersey Press Association is:

www.njpa.org

I would also recommend the following website. It has professional journalism associations, in additions to a number of different state press associations and communications companies.

www.freep.com/jobspages/links/jobboard.htm

That being said Writers Market is an excellent source as Roadwalker suggested. It is expensive, but it pays itself off rather quickly.

That last paragraph was written before you had responded to Roadwalker. Sorry.

Thanks, TV Time, for the 2 leads.
