Advice for hotels, restaurants, how to get around Naval Graduation with physical limitations to walki

Hi Guys,

This may seem premature, but I am pre-planning for my daughter's graduation later this year. I would love any advice you can give me regarding hotels and restaurants very near the base. Also,as I have a physical disability that limits my ability to walk and stand for long periods, I am a bit concerned about parking / walking from my car to the venue. It would be great if anyone knows what accomodations I can request and how to go about making such requests. Thanks so much!

Rent a wheelchair. No, really. Don’t torture yourself and make what should be a wonderful memory horrible. [Though it has been about 21 years since I wandered around Annapolis last, there was a propensity for the touristy areas to have cobblestone and brick streets, which can suck for chairs.]

Given the forum, I assume that we’re talking about Naval Station Great Lakes (in North Chicago, IL) rather than the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

I’ve never been to either one, so I can’t really suggest anything. But here’s a thread from last year asking the same question, and here’s one started by someone moving there.

Sorry, I think only 2 guys in mrArus ‘class’ back in 1983 had family show up, and they were locals. Baby officers are more likely to have family show up for graduation. But my advice still applies - don’t torture yourself, get a wheelchair. If there is going to be much walking and standing, it is torment that can be avoided by using a chair. Also prevents pain if there is a lack of available seating, or lines that can’t be avoided.

Buy one of those walker/wheelchair combos with a padded seat for when you get tired. Like this. If your mobility is as restricted as you indicate, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have one already.

Moving to General Questions.
