We have a Heritage Festival in the summer that can be fun. All the different cultures have booths set up with things to do with their country of origin. Also a Folk Music Festival, International Street Performers Festival, the Fringe (a festival of plays) and Klondike Days, which is an amusement park set up every summer for 10 days.
Edmonton, in the summer time, is one of the best places to be in the entire country. There are festivals all summer long. It’s really a wonderful city, no matter what some people may think.
We riot, but not often. I remember that night mainly because I went to the Legislature grounds for the celebrations. When I was leaving I also remember hearing some people say just behind me that they had better hurry up and go before anyone rioted.
It was a big mess, what with everyone drunk (having been drinking in the beer tents at the Leg) and being so close to Whyte Ave (maybe a 10 minutes walk) where more people had been drinking all day.
Speaking of which I’d better make sure I get St Paddy’s Day off…
Never been there, but a Canadian told us this once. We were stopped at a gas station in Tennessee and my dad saw from his license plates that the guy next to him was from Canada. So he asked him where he was headed. The guy said Florida. My dad, who loves the cold, asked the guy why he’d ever leave a place as beautiful as Canada in the summer time for Florida. Dad said, “Florida has the awful heat and humidity and the mosquitoes are horrendous this time of year.”
The Canadian paused, shook his head mournfully and said, “Ahh. But we have the deer fly.”
Bibliovore, I’m gonna have to ask you what you do for a living-- because if you expect to get into Canada as an aspiring writer, I’m afraid you’re SOL.
Immigration Canada has implemented a new policy regarding who is officially let into the country. If you’re not an engineer, doctor, or possessing some other cruicial skill, you’re not gonna get let in. Heck, even if you do have need skills, you still need to speak English and French to have a chance.
matt posted the relevant link on Preparing to Live in Canada-- hit that-- and click “immigrating to Canada,” then “Entry Requirements”, and expect to spend hours going through all the info.
Although there is a section on being sponsored, so having family in Edmonton may be a big help.
I wasn’t intending to apply as a writer, but rather as a Marketing Account Executive. I’ve taken a look at the link matt provided, and according to the rather bewildering points system, it looks like I have enough experience and skills to let me into your country and steal your jobs and women - hah!
However, this has all become rather moot now, as a change in my personal circumstances has meant that I won’t be going anywhere for the forseeable future. Suffice to say that family responsibilities will keep me in the UK for at least another few years, so you can all breathe a sigh of relief. Your paychecks and daughters are safe for now…
Thanks to all of you for the earnest and friendly advice. I really appreciate it,.
