Advice needed - Canadian retirement holiday for my parents

As it says in the title, my dad retires next year and he has previously stated that he would like to take a holiday to Canada. My mum isn’t big on cruises so there would have to be more to the holiday than just that.

I was wondering if people here have any advice or recommendations, they would be going for the scenery mostly and I have noticed some interesting looking (but expensive!) trips incorporating a train ride through the Canadian Rockies and a cruise along the Alaskan coast (yes, I’m aware Alaska isn’t Canada  ).

I imagine Autumn/Fall would be the best time of the year for it? In addition we have relatives in New York so it would be nice if they could visit them when they were over but the logistics may be problematic.

Thanks in advance, any advice is very much appreciated!

The Northwest Passage (now that the ice is rapidly melting back!), is the new Everest, they say. And it can be done in style on a cruise ship, though not cheap. Remarkable scenery and wildlife, of course, but also visits to some really interesting and isolated native communities.

“Problematic” doesn’t begin to describe the logistics, given what you’ve stated so far. New York and the Canadian Rockies are about 3000 miles from each other. Sure, it can be done if you fly, but a four-to-five hour flight to New York while on vacation in the Canadian Rockies may not be appealing.

If seeing both is something important, though, they might consider taking a train across the country, from Vancouver to Toronto. It is a little pricey, but it is indeed a land cruise, with private rooms, a dining car with properly-cooked meals, lounges, and whatnot. The train goes through the Rockies, across the prairies, through the rugged Shield country of northern Ontario, and arrives in Toronto three days after it leaves Vancouver. From there, it’s an easy hop to New York via various means.

There are many other options though. Can we narrow things down a bit? Do they like mountains, fishing villages, fall scenery, big cities…?
