Advice on buy vintage watches on Ebay

I’m looking for a vintage Omega Seamaster from the mid-1960s*. I’ve always like the look from that period. There are always some on Ebay, but the prices vary widely and I’m a little intimidated by the whole process.

What are my risks and what are my recources if I get ripped off? I assume I should do all of this through paypal? or is there a better way to keep a firewall between the seller and my cc#?

Also, I’d appreciate any tips people have on buying vintage watches online. It’s kind of hard to know what to look for when you can’t hold the item in your hand and examine it. A lot of the dealers have a picture of the back of the watch with the cover popped off, but other than obvious rust, I don’t know what to look for.I’d be looking at something in the mid-range for Omegas from the period and would expect some wear and tear, but I’d want a watch that I will be able to use for years.

*I know for some people watches are just a way of telling time (my wife is like that), but I like them, so please don’t post in here to tell me I should save my money and get a Timex (unless I need the bump).

Thanks,

Go here first and register (it’s free) and ask the quesiton in the Omega forum. They do this all day long.

That has to be a record for an answer to a question I posted here. Thanks.
