Just don’t get mad at the cats should they decide things are not to their liking and continue to eliminate somewhere in the house. Be prepared for your ideas not to work. Many cats want sand or something to scratch and bury. Many like a fairly clean area for eliminating. Another reason for scooping daily. If these enclosures make things out of sight, out of mind for you, and they don’t get cleaned enough for kitty, they may also become inclined not to use it. If they feel like it’s a dark and dangerous place where they could get cornered by another cat or predator, they won’t use it. Many cats can develop urinary issues and scooping daily plus having the boxes in a visible place can go a long way in monitoring kitty’s health. Maybe it’s the vet tech in me, but it would bother me greatly not to know what was going on in those boxes every day.
Personally, I’ve gone so far as to keep all four boxes uncovered in my home. Cats are more likely to use uncovered boxes in a multi cat household, and I’m more likely to clean them if I can see the contents and get to them without fuss. My second solution has been to use doggy waste bags with a Diaper Champ diaper bucket. Scoop into the waste bag, tie shut, then into the diaper pail for disposal once a week. Neat, clean, and not smelly (though the contents of the bucket are stinky - I won’t lie - it’s an acceptable concession to make for the neatness of it. Holding my breath for a few seconds a week is totally worth it.)
