I’ve never hired a lawyer before, but would like to, as I want to have a will drawn up and also discuss some other legal documents, (some could be complicated). What are the initial steps regarding hiring a lawyer? Do you normally have a consultation first, and then decide if you want to hire this particular lawyer? I’ve looked online and found quite a number in my city who seem qualified. Any suggestions for a hiring a lawyer and what to bring for a first meeting? Thanks
- Do you know anyone you trust who can recommend a lawyer to you?
- Contact any recommended lawyers, or any lawyers you want to work with, and schedule a free consultation. They should be willing to meet with you on their nickle to discuss what they will do and what it will ultimately cost.
Something to consider, if you have a simple will you might be able to draft it yourself first using an online will generating application or using sample forms, and then just review it with a lawyer in order to save some money.
Free consultations are usually associated with contingency work (lawsuits where the lawyer only gets paid if they win and get you a sum of money).
With wills, you may not see free consultations on offer (doesn’t hurt to ask). However you can get a 1/2 hour for $30-$40 through your local Bar Referral Service (there might be one associated with your state, county, or city). With these services, the referred lawyer is in good standing (no complaints) and experienced in your jurisdiction. Simple problems can often be sorted out in the half hour allotted (you’re not obligated to retain them).
