That’s good marketing, guaranteed to get lots of views in our current political climate. I wonder how they got folks to agree to a DNA test before filming them? Some great reaction shots.
More to the point: what would be typical “Mexican” genetic markers? Would native American markers differ all that much north and south of the border? Are hispanic markers all that different from Europeans that came to the US directly from Spain?
Great idea for an ad, even if it pisses off the racist elements in this culture. Trolling the trolls can be fun and educational.
Virtually everyone living in middle north America has some degree of “foriegn” background so the point of this exercise was to point this out.
That it exposed the exophobia for the folks interviewed is actually pretty funny. I suspect that the folks who consented to the DNA test did not expect themselves to be “one of them”.
Genius
Loved it. Internet troll of the month award, for sure.
It is also pretty good at showing how people are programmed to be consumers. At first they hate Mexico, but offer them 18% off and all of a sudden there is some interest.
Great ad! Tangentially, I started a thread here a long time ago asking if there is any data on passport holders and their political leanings. For example, do more Democrats or Republicans hold passports (indicating an interest in or need to travel beyond our borders). At the time no data was found - maybe now?
I liked the ad, and thought it was cute, but yeah, the genetics leave something to be desired. Like the US, Mexico has a lot of admixture, though of different groups. I guess you could just call any Mesoamerican, native American, or Spanish markers Mexican and call it good enough.
ETA, just found out a childhood friend was a PA on the commercial (I don’t know exactly what that means).
Production Assistant.
Around the Bay Area they had better get some good publicity, since when one of their flights diverted from SFO to Oakland (just across the Bay) the passengers got stuck on the damn plane for hours with no info and no water.
