Aerosol spray cans on airplanes

Were flying to New Orleans tomorrow for an extended weekend. My wife wants to pack a favorite hairspray . All the times we’ve flown this question has never come up because we usually just buy toiletrys when we arrive at our destenation. is it okay to pack an aerosol can or will they explode on the plane? I don’t want my clothes getting all full of hair spray.

Is she packing it in a carry-on or in checked luggage?

What sort of airplane are you flying on?

See, if it’s in the passenger cabin with you it should be OK - cabin pressure is kept at the equivalent of about 8000 above sea level or less. Since they have hairspray cans at greater elevations (like some places in Colorado) it’ll (probably) be OK.

However, not all cargo holds (where checked baggage rides) are pressurized. At the lower pressure at, say, 30,000 feet altitude yeah, it could happen.

So call the airline and ask them what THEY think. If they tell you it’s OK, it probably will be. If they say don’t pack it, don’t pack it.

Aerosol cans are perfectly safe, whether in the pressurized cabin or in unpressurized checked luggage. Further, according to the TSA, they are legal in both checked and carry-on baggage in personal-care quantities (i.e., I wouldn’t bring a case of the stuff).

That said, I can tell you from experience that not all of the TSA officers are 100% familiar with all the rules at first glance, and when they err they tend to err on the side of caution. So I’d say to speed your trip you may want to place it in checked baggage.

Thanks guys!
