“Multiple families from a San Diego suburb with a large refugee population are among those stuck in Afghanistan after going back to the country over summer break to visit grandparents and other relatives.”
I can see your childhood did not include Uncle Remus and the stories of Br’er Rabbit.
There’s no way the US can walk away and ignore the slaughter of our own citizens.
Biden seems determined to try and it’ll significantly diminish his presidency. It’ll be far worse than Carter and Iran.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse…
I missed the news, what slaughter of American citizens are you talking about?
There’s at least 1500 Americans over there and we just told people to stop coming to the airport because of imminent terror threats.
No one has been able to get Biden to budge on Aug 31.
People are going to be left behind and they’ll be targets.
I’m wondering if you read the articles you post or never get past the headline summaries. The article quotes a variety of reasons why the numbers may be incorrect, or may include those who, for various reasons, do not wish to leave. What’s Biden supposed to do exactly? Order people to be physically dragged out of Afghanistan against their will…?
As to the deadline:
The Taliban said earlier Tuesday that the group will no longer allow Afghan nationals to leave the country on evacuation flights nor will they accept an extension of the withdrawal deadline beyond the end of the month.
“They [the Americans] have the opportunity, they have all the resources, they can take all the people that belong to them, but we are not going to allow Afghans to leave and we will not extend the deadline,” he said. Evacuations carried out by foreign forces after Aug. 31 would be a “violation” of a Biden administration promise to end the U.S. military’s mission in the country, Mujahid said.
I think it I’ll be more of a hostage situation. The Taliban has more Blackhawk. than Australia, from what I have heard. They don’t want the people who know how to pilot them to leave.
This reminds me of the Americans trapped in Libya ( my husband got out right before Benghazi fell). He was registered with the US State Department , heard nothing before or after. Friends of his left behind had to get other allies to get out.
Libya…has access to a coast, and is a few hundred KM from Europe.
Yep and people die trying to get to Europe. My husband was in the interior.
I feel like people are jumping to some pretty crazy conclusions that any American in Afghanistan after 8/31 will just be immediately taken hostage or killed. Afghanistan likely won’t be on any top tourist travel lists but you’re making assumptions not based on actual evidence here. It’s been the case all along that at least some Americans would likely simply choose to stay in country, at least for the time being.
Possible suicide bombing at or near the airport.
And some number, hopefully few, but doubtfully zero, are staying in order to join the Taliban.
A dozen US soldiers were killed today in two attacks. Another attack was reported as I typed. Probably deaths will rise.
Biden seems determined to make this his Elphinstone Army. What the fuck were they thinking?
2 suicide bombers. one at the main airport gate, and one at a hotel.
Not sure what happened to my link. Here’s one with the 640 count. The 800 was a guess given to a control tower.
From what I understand there were 2 bombers at the same site at the airport. It’s am effective tactic, used many times before - first some bomber, and then a second bomber a short while later to kill the first responders.
Yeah, it’s like delayed munitions; some go off now, others (in the same region) are primed to go off a half hour or hour later.
The civilian deaths are tragic, but I won’t be sad to see ISIS-K and the Taliban going after each other’s throats once the U.S. fully pulls out.
Assume they’ve deployed loitering airborne cameras they’ll be able to track the suicide bombers back to any location in the city and all the people connected to them.
That you can’t suicide bomb Americans that aren’t there?
Then why are they still there? It appears the evacuation plan was drawn up on the back of a napkin.
