AFI's 100 Heroes & Villains

Any comments on this show last night?

Unless I missed it - a glaring omission was Richard Widmark’s Tommy Udo in “Kiss of Death”.

It was AWESOME!!!

No, I don’t think Tommy Udo was in there. But man, what a great lot of movie moments.

Is there a link to the list somewhere?

I just can’t believe Harry Potter didn’t make the list.

But seriously, what about the Eye of Sauron? Before one commercial break, they said something about “a villain that was never seen”, and instantly I thought of that one. Did I miss it?

And no Rambo, either. Thought he’d be a shoo-in. And no one from the Matrix films. Bah…the AFI’s all a bunch of old fuddies anyway.

This page lists the top five villains and top five heroes, but AFI doesn’t seem to have their full list up.

KGS, the villian who was never seen was Man from Bambi, who shot his mother.

I was glad to see Oskar Schindler made the list, although I would have put him higher up. I agree with Hannibal Lecter as the #1 villian. I have never seen To Kill a Mockingbird, would you guys agree with Atticus Finch as #1 hero?

And just so you know, I’ve never seen The Marathon Man either, but that small part with Dr. Szell left me vowing never ever to see it. Especially since I don’t mind going to the dentist.

And I missed the part about Nurse Rached…what did she do that was so terrible?

Man??? MAN???

Did they simply run out of good villians?

for a split list tryhere

Agree. Great movie. See it.

When they were down to the top 5 heroes or so, I was thinking Indiana Jones would be #1. Perfect American hero, right? Strong, smart, brave, resourceful, and so on. But when I found out that Atticus Finch was #1… I was very pleased. They got it right.

The character is exactly what every child should aspire to be. He stuck to his principles and did the right thing against a mountain of prejudice. It’s an amazing, heartstopping film.

You should really see One Flew over the Cukoos nest… Ratchet is amazing. Once you’ve seen that film you’ll never forget that character. She crushes an entire ward of souls without hardly ever raising her voice. Her condecending treatment of the patients and her test of will against Nicholson’s character is great. Personally I would have put her higher.

I picked Atticus for #1. WooHOO! I forgot about Hannibal, but he sure as hell deserved it.

Nurse Rachet was awesome. She scared the bejeezus outta me! All in all, this was a very entertaining show. I was “ooooh-ing” and “aaah-ing” through the whole thing.

I thought it was great that they picked Atticus. Lots of the heros were big flamboyant action star types, who shot all the bad guys and ran around with cool gagets and had tons of backup on their side. Atticus was the kind of hero any man or woman could actually be, just by having principles and being brave enough to stick to them. Very good choice.

I also thought it was pretty noticible how the majority of the females listed (that I saw anyway, only watched off and on) were villians. I don’t know exactly what that says about popular culture’s portrayal of strong women, but I think it says something.

The biggest problem I had was they listed Michael Corleone as a villain. What? Just becuase a guy kills doesn’t make him a villain does it? I was expecting the character to be on the list, but as a villain - no way.

I only caught the top 10 at the end. Did Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest make the villain list anywhere???

Three villians I think they should have included:
Ming the Merceless (Charles Middleton)
George Zucor
Lionel Atwill

Yes she did, somewhere in the middle. One of a few real people to make the list of characters, alongside Ghandi and Patton.

One of the commercial breaks said something like “coming up, a hero so nice, he says his name twice.” I thought they meant Forrest, Forrest Gump, but he wasn’t on the list. Who was that referring to?

I wasn’t really paying attention either but my guess is “Bond. James Bond.”

ivylass, get thee to a video rental store!

I thought Maximus from Gladiator would have been higher on the list.

Joan Crawford - Mommie Dearest made the list but I am not sure the ranking.

I thought Ming the Merceless was played by Max VanSydow.
