Oh, and to answer the OP: no, I don’t. Really, I don’t. But when I was your age? Hell, yeah.
Period.
I’m on it Anal Turdnip!
I think we all can agree:
The original post was stupid, end of story!
Yeah, I want to take the original post to an isolated junkyard, shoot it in the kneecaps and beat it with a lead pipe as it tries to crawl away. When my arms get tired, I’ll drag the original post onto a pile of rusty nails, then drop a large electromagnet on it, increasing the magnetic field until the nails sluice through the original post’s body. then I’d drop the original post into a car crusher and snap its bones as I crush it into a cube.
Then things will get nasty…
One of the few things that I’m really really sure about is that that knee jerk rage reaction is the most dangerous part of the human character. That righteous need to hurt others who deserve it, is pretty much the root of all evil regardless of the target.
I really see no distinction between directing it at skinheads, or Hitler directing it at jews, or crackers at black people, or men at women, or liberals at conservatives (or vice versa.) Homophobes direct it at gays, Lissener directs it at everybody who disagrees with him.
We all feel it from time to time, the trick is to recognize it for what it is… a scream of aggression from our reptile brain at the recognition of a potential antagonist.
It was probably a pretty useful thing a million years or so ago when any stranger from a different tribe you might meet was an enemy. It would be a good survival trait to have a reflex that shut off empathy and maximized aggression and got the adrenal juices going.
Not necessarily all that useful now, though.
Where the fuck did that come from? I’m currently in about 7 different debates with people who disagree with me. Cite me what the fuck you’re talking about.
Anywhere, anytime. When I’ve expressed anger at anyone, it’s been because they’ve been disrespectful or insulting about me or my views. I disagree with people CONSTANTLY. Find me one cite in almost ten years that shows me attacking someone because of their disagreement, not because of their behavior. One cite.
(We’ve done this before, Scylla, and no one can ever find a cite. The only responses I’ve ever gotten when I’ve challenged this meme are silence and apologies. Why would you start this bullshit again? Out of nowhere?)
How does this contradict my point, Lissener? You go off because you feel that you’ve been disrespected and insulted. Bigots go off because they think black people want to mug them, marry their women and pollute their genes. Homophobes go off because gay people threaten their manhood.
I did say that this reaction was directed at people who the attacker feels deserve it. So, I don’t doubt your reason. You can’t be self righteous without a reason.
Though, feeling insulted or disrepected is pretty weak, imo, not any rea justification for character assassination.
Dude. I have had thousands of perfectly civil disagreements on this board. That contradicts the point. The few times I have “gone on the attack”–out of 15,000 posts–have been in response to what I felt were unwarranted personal attacks. They had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO with whether I perceived a disagreement of my views or not. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
THAT contradicts your point.
To inflate that false meme that is only perceived to be true because, “Yeah, I never saw him do that, but people like Scylla says he does that, so he must” into a comparison with wanting to torture and murder skinheads? A new level of astounding low, Scylla.
Dennis Rader met lots of people he didn’t murder.
No, it doesn’t. I agree that you can have civil discourse with those you disagree with, until, as you state, you feel that you or views have been “disrespected and insulted.” Your words.
“Disrepected and insulted” doesn’t justify character assassination, IMO.
Hardly. Your reputation has little to do with me, and everything to do with you. Hateful behavior carries a cost. Don’t blame me for your rep. You earned it.
I’ll let you in on a little secret. Everybody believes it’s justified when they engage in it.
The message being sent is more like “I’m forever doomed to wearing long-sheeved shirts or working as a dishwasher.”
Then again there’s the hardcore White Power guy with swastikas tattooed on his face, in which case it’s “I’m going to spend the rest of my life in lockdown at the state pen, so who gives a fuck?”
I’m really starting to think that Curtis LeMay is nothing more than a troll. I keep seeing the same thing over and over from him. Start a provocative posts about abortion, homosexuals, slaves, “I want to kill nazi’s”, reply a couple of times then off to start another one. I won’t respond to him anymore.
Neal Stephenson wrote a book Snow Crash in which offenders had their crimes tattooed across their forehead. One main character had “Poor impulse control” on his noggin.
It seems silly at first, but more like a good idea as I think about it. Guys with swastika tattoos have just done us the favor, imo.
Then again, I’m reading Superfreakonomics now, so I’m sure there is some rational incentive for someone to tattoo a swastika on their forehead.
Ditto. I also think he’s as much an adolescent middle school student as I am a 1970s black disco diva. I in fact hope he’s a troll because if he’s serious and doesn’t get help I wouldn’t be the least surprised when an automatic weapon and a crowded fast food place converge in his future.
I’m reading that too. I’m about to sell my house and based on that book I’ve decided not to go with Century 21 but with a pimp named Kool Daddy; I just need to make sure he understands that while I don’t mind paying him 2% of the sale I’m not giving free stays here for cops.
Hmmmm. I wonder what chapter you are on?
(Seriously, I just about fell off my chair, that was so funny.)
Well, I hope you’re prepared to stand by that, Foxxy Esmerelda.
(Underline added)
Which is it? You contradict yourself.
It’s a lie to say that I become angry at “everybody who disagrees with” me. (If not a conscious lie, certainly an example of a cavalier disregard for the actual truth.) Or do you agree that I only lose my temper when I feel personally attacked, regardless of the disgreement? And it’s obviously regardless of the disagreement because 99% of the time, my disagreements are perfectly civil? (I’m not defending losing my temper. I’m simply refusing to let you keep repeating this lie, that I will launch a personal attack on anyone who disagrees with me. Yes I lose my temper if I feel personally attacked. No, I do NOT lose my temper simply because someone disagrees with me.)
Once again, as every other time someone repeats this baseless meme, it’s proven to be false. I don’t expect an apology from you Scylla, but you seem normally honorable enough to admit that you were wrong to lob that–melodrama here, but I can think of no other word–*libelous *bullshit into this wholly irrelevant thread, completely without provocation.
As long as they are buying, and it takes a minimum of supportive talk (Harleys are AWESOME!) to keep the drinks coming.
ETA: I was an adolescent prick until my freshman biology teacher called me on it. I looked at my actions and said, “No, this really isn’t what I meant when I just wanted to be anti-authority,” and turned into the liberal wuss you know me as.
- If he were any younger, he’d be banned.
Meh, I can believe it – he certainly comes across as that naive and inexperienced. Very black and white view of the world. While I find him offensive at times, I’m willing to cut the kid a wee bit of slack because, well, he’s a kid.
(And at least he beats the hell out of that Andrew guy. shudder)
