Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S01E20: Nothing Personal (open spoilers)

Ditto. It was an ironic Hail Hydra, methinks. Not an elaborate deception. Ward saying “wait, you don’t understand” was a last ditch attempt to exploit her feelings for him long enough for him to recapture her.

I think “wait, you don’t understand” was Ward’s prelude to “… if you don’t cooperate with me, Garrett will do something even worse to you”, but was interrupted by something worse showing up because Garrett had run out of patience.

When both Skye and Peterson confront Ward by telling him that “just doin’ my duty” is the Nazi line, I’m left with this fear that the season will end with Ward coming to understand what he really is, and then (presumably) being killed in some noble way that saves the others. I hope not. That’d be trite.

I’m really hoping it won’t turn out that Ward is being some sort of super-secret triple agent, and deep down he’s really a good guy. THAT would be trite.

I don’t think there’s any way they could do that after he killed Koenig. I suspect that the season finale will involve Ward turning on Garrett, and both dying as a result. Kind of like Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine with Skye in the Luke Skywalker role. Ooh, subtle foreshadowing?

I think that option’s pretty much gone after he gunned down the cops taking Skye in.

Redemption, maybe. “I was just in deep cover!” no way…

Kind of like Giles cleaning his glasses?

My fanwank for the landing gear is that there are indeed sensors in place to prevent intruders from gaining access to the Bus by sneaking on that way. However, those sensors are smart enough to recognize Coulson and not trigger an alarm.

Right at the end of the scene, they did show one of the cops he shot, writhing around, holding his leg. So while I don’t buy the triple agent idea, it does appear that Ward avoided actually killing any of the cops.

One idea I had for where they might go with Ward: at some point down the line, Ward is killed, temporarily resolving the “Ward is Hydra” plot line. A reconstituted Shield (or successor agency, depending on where they go with that) uses the Tahiti technology to bring him back to life, but erases any memories he had of ever being a Hydra agent. Reasons are then contrived to have him working with the old group, with no memory that he was ever a traitor - and everyone has to go along with it, or else risk the memory patch unraveling.

I agree that Ward avoids killing people whenever he can. He will do it when necessary or when he’s directly ordered to kill somebody. But he won’t kill anyone just for the fun of it.

I noticed that too - I’m thinking that he didn’t want to appear completely bloodthirsty in front of Skye. He was still trying to hold on to some slight hope of convincing her that he’s just loyal to Garrett, but not really a Nazi Hydra agent.

Has there really even been much on-camera killing so far in this series? The only one immediately coming to mind is Ward shooting Thomas Nash, and even then I can’t recall if they showed us anything more than Dourif’s face when the gun was fired. I think it showed him getting hit in the chest, but memory isn’t serving me well. It might have only shown a bleeding hole in his chest, after the fact.

The darkforce dude getting kablooied on camera I wouldn’t classify in the same league as Ward gunning down cops in broad daylight. IMO he did not kill those cops. I would guess the reason has nothing to do with his character, a specialist (ie killer), and everything to do with the perceived violence-level of what is ultimately a Disney property.

Ward probably still thinks his irresistible charm can convince Skye, or anyone, of anything. “Just let me explain!” But then his explanation is “you don’t understand!”

So Garrett saved him from his troubled youth and took him under his wing. Big deal. That’s no excuse.

Quite a bit, yeah. Just since Ward went evil, there’s the scene where he kills Hand and the two Shield agents guarding Garret, and then the two guards in the elevator when they break into the Fridge. And while Koenig wasn’t killed on-screen, the shot of him lying on the grate with his eyes open as blood drips from his lacerated neck wasn’t exactly Disneyfied.

Ward has headshot, on camera, 4 SHIELD agents, at least one of which with a nice but brief on camera blood spray from his forehead. Two of them on the plane with Garrett and Hand, and two of them in the elevator in the Fridge.

Too late to edit:

Disney has not shied away from sex & violence in their non-Disney labelled properties. They owned Mirimax from 1993 to 2010 after all.

Okay, scratch that thought, then.

Thank You.

Especially when we also had the scene of Ward washing the blood off his shank and then the scene of Simmons performing the post-mortem with close-ups of the fatal wounds. I think we’ve gone full gore at this point.

Nitpick: garrote.

Because that worked so well with Coulson, keeping him in the dark about Tahiti>

No, the only way out of this for Ward is for him to take one for the team at some point, prison or a sacrificial death, and then he’s gone from the series.

I hope they keep him around as a bad guy for longer tho - he’s working out much better as a semi-conflicted mostly-bad Ward than he ever did as “mr specialist traumatized works-alone even though he’s “in wuv” agent” Ward.

I hope he stick around as evil as long as possible. Garrett I don’t care one way or the other, but Ward and Flowers are getting much more interesting now (wonder what she was hoping to get out of an actual real Clairvoyant that she didn’t get?)
Now, what I’m really wondering, who is keeping track of the “eyeball cam” on poor Mike to keep him in line? Garrett has been wandering around now for a while either pretending to be an Agent, or liberating the Fridge, or running his new post-fridge ops from whatever sewer treatment facility he’s taken over - so who’s watching for signs of rebellion to keep Mike in check?
