Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S02E21 S02E22 - S.O.S. Parts 1 and 2

In the show universe, Fury had Coulson’s body transferred to the TAHITI facility, where they (a) used Kree blood/other bodily fluids to bring him back to life, and (b) removed all his memories of that, and implanted memories that he literally went to Tahiti to recover from his injuries.

In terms of when things are happening - apparently everything in the MCU is pretty much real-time, as in the Chitauri invasion happened in the summer of 2012, SHIELD fell in early 2014, etc. The TV show keeps up with that, since the 3 movies that have come out since the show started are immediately followed by episodes that reference the movies.

Having said all that, Coulson apparently will be forever dead in the movie universe, implying the two have diverged. Partly that’s so the movies, which are the real moneymakers, don’t have to be beholden to plot lines introduced in the multiple TV series. The TV shows are in place to serve the movies, not vice-versa.

The other aspects of the show are causing to overlook a major event: Raina’s death. I think it was handled well. She obviously knew she was going to die but went ahead anyway. So I guess there’s some redemption there - although with Raina, it’s hard to tell. Between her need for revenge and her self-loathing, she may have decided sacrificing her life was an acceptable cost to start a war between Skye and Jiaying.

Yes, when he and Skye were saying goodbye, I thought he was going off to prison. Finding out that he was going off to have his mind wiped seems a lot worse. No matter how happy this new Dr Winslow seems, the reality is the original Cal, troubled as he was, is dead. Taking away his memories of Daisy - the one positive aspect of his life - seems especially cruel.

You know, I hate to criticize what was a very good season finale, but why on Earth did they transport a critically wounded Bobbi from Spain to the not very well staffed or supplied undercover SHIELD base, instead of a local emergency room? She had a gunshot wound - it’s not like those require any super secret SHIELD technology to treat. Delay between injury and treatment is still one of the most critical survival factors for trauma.

Well, with the obvious exception of Agent Carter:wink:

For all we know, the SHIELD base is in France.

Other thoughts:

Coulson isn’t perma-dead vis a vis the movies. Joss is just spouting off. He’s the one who brought Phil back in the first place. Since he isn’t going to be directing any more Marvel movies or serve as their phase-arc guy anymore, what he thinks about Coulson and the movies is less than meaningless.

Hartley will be back next season. If Phil can survive it, so could she. Just in time to be a big reveal, like Mike was a few episodes ago.

MacLachlan really does deserve awards for his performance. Although if they billed him for all the chewed scenery he might have to take a loss on the gig.

I’m going to go on record as predicting that the Diviner metal won’t be a factor when everybody starts going through terragensis. If people started petrifying all over the place with bottles of fish oil in their hands, it will quickly become obvious what is happening. Becoming Inhuman, OTOH, can be more…low-key.

Loved May’s mind-fuck of Agent 33. Bitch got what she had coming. But I don’t know about Ward’s new Hydra team. Would Hydra have ever bothered with third-rate bikers?

Loved Chekov’s axe.

All in all, an excellent season finale and cliff-hanger for next season.

Except they handed over Ward to FBI agents in a car.

If Raina didn’t pull a Destiny and write a bunch of journals (and/or videos) to pop up in later seasons, I’ll be dipped.

Hunter got a signal from Bobbi’s phone while they were flying back from France. (no idea what they did with the quinjet left in France, though.) So, they could’ve kidnapped Bobbi in France, then taken her back to the US to torture. I don’t remember noticing any signage in the abandoned building they were in, to notice if it was in English or French.

Xena and Adama both are pining for the fjords, they’ve passed on, they are no more, they have ceased to be, they’ve expired and gone to meet their makers, they’re stiffs, bereft of life, they rest in peace. They’ve kicked the bucket, shuffled off their mortal coil, they are EX-GUEST STARS.

I think it’s time to move on to a new wildass theory to flog. Maybe you can opine on Garret coming back…

Yes! I thought the same thing, same phrase, when Mac had to use the axe.

And yes, the last-second, “oh by the way” cliff-hanger with Simmons was great.

When this show was first announced, it was going to be “How do regular people deal with a world of super heroes” and that sounded exciting to me but that is a really hard show to write and do well so the premise changed over time and now it looks like next season will just be Alphas. Alphas was a good show so this might be too but it wasn’t really the show I thought this series would be.

Wait, who’s Hartley again?

Lucy Lawless, who got her arm chopped off after exposure to a Diviner. We never saw her body, only her funeral. Some of us think that means she’ll be back. Others think we’re crazy and wish we’d shut up about it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hartley will be back and avenge us for the cruel mockery we endure. It was barely a flesh wound. Gonzales won’t be back because we saw him crumbling and I don’t think Almos would want to come back anyway.

Kinda weird how they made such a big deal about getting Skye & Raina to a special terragenesis Kree temple and all, but now all it takes is a few molecules of the stuff to turn people and Jaiying went from strictly enforcing a long preparation & selection process for new Inhumans and then decided “the heck with it” and was willing to release the vapor willy nilly all over the place.

Wasn’t the point of the Diviner and temple and ceremony for the purpose of creating specially selected Inhumans to carry on the legacy? And Jiaying’s long preparation and selection process was to duplicate that to ensure people are ready for it and can help the community?

Given what’s happened and SHIELD knowing where they are now, it makes sense to throw caution to the wind and just try to build an army. They didn’t need one before, but they do now

I think the thing that bugged me about the Inhumans was that one of the big iconic things about them is that for the most part, they look different than humans. Blackbolt, Crystal and arguably Medusa can pass but they are considered the outliers. The other main Inhumans in the books all look different- Gorgon has hooves, Triton is a fishman, Karnak has the big head (I think that got retconned into not being terrigenesis but something else?) So on the show they had all these regular looking people walking around Afterlife and it was explained that most of them had been identified as Inhuman but hadn’t gone through the change yet. Okay sure.
Sky goes through and she looks the same. Raina goes through…turns into Sonic the Hedgehog. One of the few other powered Inhumans we spend a lot of time with is Gordon…who gained teleportation psychic powers but lost his eyes.
Skye’s mom and Lincoln also have powers but no physical changes…ehh, okay.

Now this episode we meet a few other Inhumans (Multi-Ginger-Ninja and there was one guy who seemed to have speed powers) and they all look boring and normal.
Make 'em weird looking and “other.”
So season 3 Super Agents of Shield-
Skye, Lincoln and Deathlok for sure right?

Thanks. :dubious:

But just the opposite. I’d like the main team to be Coulson, May, Fitz, Simmons, etc- with no supers and no one character hogging all the screen time.

Skye is a waif- well, pretty close to it.

http://www.kissmywonderwoman.com/2012/02/joss-whedons-waif-fu.html
*But I have beef. Specifically, I have beef with Joss Whedon’s constant use of Waif Fu.

What is Waif Fu? Well, it’s when a young girl, small, slender, pretty, miraculously kicks the ass of man much bigger than her. Maybe she’s mystically strong, maybe she’s just really good at judo, maybe everyone she beats up secretly has brittle bone disease. Whatever. It’s when you see a tiny hot chick beating up Rambo.*

Look, I know some posters like Skye and want supers- so all I want is for them to have their perfect show. “Skye and her band of Inhumans”.

When I saw the crystals releasing vapor underwater the first thing I thought of was Triton and Atlanteans.

Why didn’t SHIELD recover the crystals?

I was joking. I thought the prostheses made him look like Bruce Campbell. YMMV.
Best line of the night: “Science, bee-yotch!”

Multi-Ginger-Ninja : best gf ever.
