His isn’t a linear progression though. Neil Young has been any one of the above, and at times, all three things, at any given point in his career. He did some pretty grunged out solos with the Buffalo Springfield for instance.
Another old rocker who’s sort of like the underground/indie Neil Young is Fred Cole who along with his wife Toody are 2/3 of the band Dead Moon. Cole was in the band The Lollipop Shoppe who had a hit in the 60s with “'You Must Be A Witch”. Dead Moon kicks ass. If You like Neil Young, check out Dead Moon.
I saw Patti Smith a few years ago. I was pretty impressed with the notable number of 15/16yr olds in the audience. I was even more impressed with the fact that Patti blew the fucking roof off the joint!
I saw Motörhead in London just over a week ago, I couldn’t hear properly for three days, my sense of balance was slightly affected, and Lemmy and the band drank pints of beer and chain smoked solidly throughout the whole set. So I would say that Lemmy may not rock harder than before, but he certainly isn’t slowing down in any kind of way. It is also the only concert I have ever been to at which there was a NAKED FEMALE CROWDSURFER!
I don’t know if it would be physically possible for Iggy Pop to rock harder now than he did back in the day, but the man is certainly still rockin’ hard.
