Agnotology - The Spread Of Ignorance

I was pleased to learn that the deliberate spreading of ignorance now has an official name and is being studied as a sociological phenomena.

Our enemy now has a name.

The correct term is agnoiology and it’s been around since at least 1854.

From OED:

I think the two definitions are close, but not a match. One sort of ignorance has an element of being deliberate. The other does not.

But, I Thank You for the additional word!

Good point. And thank you for bringing my attention to both words. (Had to check the OED, one is in there, one isn’t, which simply means they haven’t updated that section yet.)

What is amazing is that you can give documented truth to these people and they will argue to the end of the earth it is not true. But tell them a falsehood and they will instantly believe it!

Like gossip around the neighborhood which is wrong. Or laws. They firmly believe the erroneous versions!

I once had a girlfriend who was ALWAYS wrong. So much so, if I was driving and did not know which way to go, I would ask her, then go the opposite direction. That was ALWAYS the correct way to go! (She would get REALLY ticked at me when I did this. )

One of the professors quoted is David Dunning, of Dunning-Kruger Effect fame.
It’s good to have qualified people studying the issue, there are too many cranks out there who claim to be working to get to the Truth while doing nothing but spreading their own ignorance.

Knowing the steps that can be taken to arrive to the truth is good, being aware of what steps can be used to obfuscate the truth is even better; Carl Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit it’s a great tool for that by including a list of common means through which ignorance is (deliberately or unconsciously) spread.

Driving while my GF gives directions:
She tells me- … now move to the right lane
I move to the right lane.
She says- what are you doing? Move to the right lane!
I answer- this is the right lane!"
She replies No!, this is the wrong lane!"
:smack:

Either the ignorance has spread to me, or maybe it’s senility setting in, but I read this as Agnewtology.

. . . and it’s taking longer than we thought.

What, you didn’t think ignorance would fight back?!

It IS fighting back, and that is what is taking longer than we thought, considering the dedicated forces they have on their side. Which includes the entire media/industrial complex.

I am deeply disturbed by your lack of faith in the media industrial complex.

And I’m having doubts in your commitment to sparkle motion.
