The Great Turkey Fest has come and gone. Presents have been opened, Christmas greetings exchanged with distant family members, the turkey has been consumed (well, parts of it, at least).
The pressure is off. Now, the joys of Boxing Day, when you don’t have to do anything in particular - just veg out, read the book-presents, listen to the CD-presents, and try to figure out the instruction manuals for the electronic-presents (it took poor Piper 15 minutes just to work out how to put the batteries in Mrs Piper’s new can-opener  ). And of course, filling up the odd hole with nibblies. And in the evening, just relaxing and enjoying the lights of the Christmas tree, without any gnawing concern that a gift has yet to be put under it.
And no obligations - on Boxing Day, there is nothing that one is required to do, other than make formula for Piper Cub, who doesn’t quite understand the point of the day and can’t operate Mrs Piper’s new can-opener either. But Boxing Day generally is the one day of the year where everyone accepts “I don’t feel like it , thanks” as a valid excuse.
So enjoy Boxing Day, fellow Commonwealthians!
And to the US Dopers, please rest assured that I’m thinking of you with sympathy, really and truly, as I nibble my shortbread and enjoy a glass of port by the fire. Good luck trudging through the snow to work and dealing with tired co-workers and irritable members of the public who all really, really need to experience the humble joys of Boxing Day.
the gentleman in the white house gave some federal workers boxing day off, so i’m joining you in a lazy day after. it is nice, a nice lazy day with no obligations, no expectations.
i might hit the mall later but now i’m enjoying watching the cats destroy paper wrap, gift bags, and hopping in and out of boxes.
My husband is Australian and my kids are dual citizens. I mentioned to my 5 year old that today was Boxing Day and to ask his dad what that holiday was about. According to my husband, the entire purpose of Boxing Day is to watch the Melbourne Cricket Grounds Boxing Day test. When I hinted that there might have been some other idea behind it, he hedged that there might have, at some point, been boxes involved, but that cricket is definitely the thing that’s being celebrated. (he was only partially kidding)
Would love to spend that day relaxing and figuring out where I am going to put all of the kiddies’ new toys and stuff, but alas, I am a working stiff today.
I am not missing my son playing with his Monster Truck battle arena or Wall-e toy that have the decibel level approx. of a jet engine.
I love Boxing Day! Everyone should have a Boxing Day. It’s the day to decompress, to relax, to sit and what I think is the most important–appreciate. I do *not *do Boxing Day sales. I hate the rush to go out and shop immediately after the frenzy of all the shopping that comes before (for a lot of people). Boxing Day is the chance to enjoy your presents if that’s your thing–it sure was mine as a kid. I always got (and angle to get) a book for Christmas, so there will be reading, listening to music, puttering around the house and
Ahem, excuse me to your hubby, but Boxing Day is, in the correctly wintery parts of the Commonwealth, football is the order of the day. I shall be going down the pub shortly with my sister, several grown-up nephews, nieces, boyfriends and hangers-on to watch Villa thump Arsenal. Come on The Villa!
Glad to hear some sanity has finally crept into the decision-making at 1600! welcome to the world of Boxing Day, the only holiday dedicated to needing a day to recover from a holiday. Be lazy!
My, that would be nice. Unfortunately, some of us had to crawl into work today. The drive in took me FOUR MINUTES today. Even on Sunday it takes seven. The suck is unbelievable.
hmmm - while I agree with the general theme of loafing, particularly in a pub with family and friends, I feel constrained to comment that in the really wintry part of the Commonwealth, Boxing Day is the day to watch the opening game of the world junior hockey tournament, in which Canada is going for its fifth straight gold medal.
Other than that minor correction, please enjoy your outlined loafing activity.
Let’s hear it for Boxing Day! Today’s plans include some reading, some TV sports (no cricket though), and possibly puttering in the garage, though that might have to be pre-empted by a nap sometime.
Definitely no shopping. That would be too much like work.
I have it both ways, in a way. I was scheduled for work, and got up and got halfway there. My manager called to send me home. The surgeon has canceled his cases for the day. He did reschedule them for tomorrow, though… I contemplate not doing much of anything, now that I’m home safe.
Thing is, the roads here are deadly. There is at least one jack-knifed semi out there, and scads of car accidents. Mother Nature, wanting to upstage Santa, diva that she is, coated (not glazed–too thick) everything with ice last night. It took one of my coworkers 3 hours to get into work. It was scary on the expressway–not all of them are salted/sanded. The bridges in particular were dicey. My driveway is a lawsuit waiting to happen. It is going to warm up later today and let’s hope it melts some of this stuff. This was our second, if not third ice storm this winter. We usually don’t get ice like this(we get snow or sleet), so it’s been a bit freaky. We have not lost power, thank goodness. I feel for the crews and the salt guys who are working OT these days.
I did take a huge load of stuff to the Salvation Army here the week prior to Xmas, so I don’t even have to do any Boxing Day sorting. I think BD is an awesome holiday.
Our local gov’t employees vote on our holidays for the year, and in our collective wisdom picked today as one. So I’m home watching the snow swirl. It’s hard to tell how much accumulation we got over the last 2 days, but it took 1.5 hours to extract our houseguests from the driveway this morning. I was planning to snowshoe (slog) through the new snow, but the wind makes that unappetizing. Time to play with the software prezzies!
eaten my turkey sandwich YUM (but no cranberry, I don’t like to mix sweet and savoury). Best breakfast ever!
taken the dog for a good walk, because
we found the teeny tiny black remote for my husband’s new digital picture frame, which he took into his work today, placing said teeny tiny black remote on top of his car and then driving off. At least he didn’t put the digital picture frame on the car roof. I found it in the middle of the road, and it may be worse for wear.
tidied up the living room
drunk almost a whole pot of tea
selected a Purdy’s hedgehog to have with the last mug of tea
I’m about to start the ginormous crossword puzzle from last Saturday’s Globe and Mail. For those of you who are unfamiliar, it’s a huge crossword that takes up the entire two pages when you unfold the newspaper fully. I haven’t even had a chance to open that section of the paper in the last week, it’s been so crazy. Mr Flair and I may take in a movie (or may not, we’re both feeling a little lazy today).
I got up early and tended to cats, laundry, dishes, and the dismantling of our very dried-out Christmas tree. The man slept, having suffered an insomnia attack again last night.
So much for my plans for us to get out of the house and do stuff today. Maybe if I’m lucky I can get to the library (assuming it’s open) to pick up books they’re holding for me.
