Ah, Yojimbo is just beginning!

Turner Classic movies. Before this was The Seven Samurai. It’s an Akira Kurosawa fest.

Gojira?

Gojira? No Sanjuro!

Rashomon is the best Kurosawa, says I.

Who has a rash, mon?

I was glad to see Yojimbo being broadcast. “More people should see this movie!” I thought. Then I realized it was on Turner Classic Movies, which nobody gets. Ah well. If at least one person got to see it for the first time, it was worth it. One of the best movies ever.

I dunno; I watched it again recently. I remembered it being much different.

He, heh, I have Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Throne of Blood on DVD (and Sanjuro and Rashomon, too). And in a few months *Ikiru is coming out on DVD.

Back in High School, I lost a friend over Yojimbo

Dumb-ass Eastwood fan.

Damn, and I missed it?? Damn…

Quite fond of the movie myself

I love most things Kurosawa. Toshirô Mifune is one of my favourite actors of all time.

Aww feck it, you’ve ruined my Saturday afternoon house cleaning plans. scampers of the load up the DVD with Yojimbo Hehe

Yojimbo is one of my favorite movies of all times. My classmates got sick of how many papers I did on it in film school.
Of course, Dreams is pretty awsome, too…

Seven Samurai will always be the definitive Kurosawa film for me… it’s the most painless way to introduce foreign films to my diehard blood and guts movie buddies. Ran was pretty good. Nobody mentioned The Hidden Fortress? Can’t wait for Ikiru!

Funny.

I love Yojimbo. Seven Samaurai is awesome, but it’s always pissed me off that the body count doesn’t add up. also, it makes good story, but I don’t like watching the little stud sword master dude get whacked at the end by the sniper…

anyhoo, any Kurosawa is great movie

Not a HUGE Kurasawa fan; I think he peaked with Rashomon. But Yojimbo is probly my second favorite.

TCM has become quite a valuable resource for film buffs. Thanks to them, I have dubs of all of Tarkovksy’s films, all the Val Lewton-Jacques Tourneur/Robert Wise collaborations, and a growing library of silent films. I have a bujillion cable channels, but I rarely watch anything anymore but TCM and IFC, and mostly TCM.

Allow me to confirm, then, that it was worth it. I was at my ex’s sister’s for Thanksgiving and just happened to flick across TCM while Tom Cruise and Barry Zwick(?) were discussing Seven Samurai - fortunately I listened to the discussion long enough to realize it was actually coming on in a few minutes rather than this being a long mental masturbation session for Cruise and Zwick. So I caught both Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, both for the very first time, in one evening’s viewing.

Yojimbo was a great movie, and I can see how it influenced later Western (ie cowboy, not European/American) films. But I enjoyed Seven Samurai far more. Firstly, the battle scenes were a treat to watch, especially because I recognized some of the defensive maneuvers as elements of European pike drill, and the tactics were brilliant (altho I do admit to thinking I should have followed the body count as well). Plus there was the whole cameraderie element - each samurai (or wannabe, in one case) had their own character and individual outlooks, but they all meshed together and lived and worked as a cohesive unit. And the tragic love story, and the whole conflict between the lives of farmers and the lives of samurai playing out, and and and and… takes deep breath

Anyway, yeah. Kurosawa rules and I’m gonna have to start renting DVDs of whatever I can find to see more of his work.

Am I the only one who thought this was a Usagi Yojimbo thread?

The only Kurosawa I’ve seen is Seven Samurai, and dammit I want more. I can’t stand watching moveis on TV, though, there are like… commercials and editing and crap.

So, I guess I’ll just have to wait until I can afford the overpriced DVD…

Dang, reading the thread title, I thought this was about a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament.

(Rock. Definitely rock is the best. The others are for wimps and lusres.)
