So, I am pleased to welcome both aha and aenea to the Straight Dope Message Board in general, and the Pit in particular. And I wish to thank them both, too. I really wasn’t expecting to get anything, that “send me chocolate” was just a schtick. But I’m happy about getting it!

Did you physically get chocolate, or are you just talking about their offers of chocolate? How does someone send you chocolate?
How does someone send chocolate?
Well, ya see there’s this new little thing called the “Postal Service,” invented by Ben Franklin, I believe. You’ve probably seen those blue steel boxes on street corners, right? It has a stylized eagle stenciled on it, too. If you put the right series of numbers and letters, and enough special stickers on a parcel, someone will come by, get the stuff out of that blue box, and actually deliver it to the place described by that series of numbers and letters. And if you take your parcel to right building and get the people there to put enough super-special stickers on it, those people will then take it the correct location in just a day or two.
It’s quite amazing. I’m surprised no one thought of this a long time ago.

The Egyptians had a postal system around 2000 BC, using messengers on horseback.
But I think picmr said it best, the second S in MPSIMS is the most important one.
And for all those that are confused as to how one sends chocolate in this heat, you go to Godiva’s online and order, or send a gift certificate.
