There is a theory among Pakistani Muslims (my experience is with Sunni Muslims, so I cannot say what Shia Muslims think/say about this) that the Ahmadi (also known as Qadiani) movement in Islam, which began in the Panjaab, was started by the British in their effort to divide and conquer Muslims or simply to weaken Muslim unity (which was arrayed against them). One supporting fact is that the original pledge of allegiance (baiyat) to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad included promising to uphold and support the government - and this during the British Raaj.
So, is there any validity to this claim that the British started the Ahmadi/Qadiani movement or is this purely a movement from within?
