AIG Hands Out 50 $1 Million Bonuses!

I have one question: WHY are the US taxpayers giving money to this corrupt organization? Rewarding the people who cause the problem?
Can Congress rescind this?:smack:

Got a link to a story?

Is this it?

At least the Obama administration put the kibosh on the Citiplane.

I hate all these corporate pricks.

A lot of times it depends on how things are structured in a budget. The law then steps in and decides. For instance in Illinois (this varies by state), the courts have ruled that any bonus or conditional benefit (such as sick leave) that is accured for in your P&L has to be paid, because the courts are saying it’s a form of payroll. By law payroll HAS to be met first.

So that could be the reason. I’m not saying it IS the reason. But there could be reasons like that. Perhaps the person getting the bonus has a contract, and could sue. To fight the lawsuit may wind up costing the company more.

It also may do things like make it harder to attract quality candidates. I don’t really buy this, because it implies there are an extremely limited number of people to choose form. (Just my opinion)

So when you see things like that, you have to remember there may be reasons.

If the intention of the government is to give businesses money to keep them open so workers won’t get laid off, if the government puts a condition on giving the company money (such as don’t give out million dollar bonuses) it may run into problems, such as if the government says “No million dollar bonuses” we can’t take it because then we run afoul of our other polices. Etc etc

Nothing new here. I worked for a bank a while back (programming), and we were told the bank was looking into either outsourcing or selling the retail division. Not that it wasn’t making money, mind you, it’s that it wasn’t making enough money. Now, if you’re getting this from your bosses, there’s a real good chance it’s going to happen, so I started looking for another job. Right before I left, the CEO retired and got a 70 million dollar bonus.

How the hell do you reconcile “we’re selling our most visible department to another company because it’s not profitable enough” with “This guy’s retiring, so we’re going to hand him 70 million dollars”?
