Aimee Semple McPherson

I just read an enlightening Straight Dope column that talked about the mysterious disappearance of Aimee Semple McPherson. I’ve only heard that name once before, and it was associated with another odd story.

Back when I was young and foolish enough to seek information in other places besides The Straight Dope, I read a book by Scot Morris called “The Book of Strange Facts and Useless Information.” I know now that some of the stories in there never really happened, but I have to ask about this one.

According to the Morris book, Mrs. McPherson was buried with a live telephone in her coffin. I don’t know if this was because she feared being buried alive or because she thought she might phone her relatives from beyond the grave.

In any case, could this crazy story be true?

In the 19th century, fear of being buried alive was common.
This may explain things.
