Air conditioners

I have a little knob on the air conditioning unit in my bedroom which allows me to keep the aircon’s ventilator open or closed. Only problem is, I have no idea what an open or closed ventilator would accomplish.

What is the desirable state for this ventilator? What precisely does it ventilate? Which state maximises cooling?

A little information would be much appreciated…

It should normally be closed to recirculate the air. The AC is more efficient if it’s closed.

It’s put there for use in cases where you want to bring air from outside into the room. You might want to do this when using the AC as “fan only”; it would be a way to cool the room if it were colder outside than inside. It might be used under AC if you were trying to flush out smoke or something.
