Yes, because Buddhism is not an “exclusive” religion, and most Buddhists happen to be more or less Animist. They name they give their religious character is Buddhist, they are so called by others, and their scientific (animist) beliefs include the idea that making an offering to physical embodyments like airplanes is both polite and wise.
If it was /obvious/ that she must have been “Buddhist” to do something like that, it wouldn’t have been necessary to say so in the report. But it does offer an “explanation”, and readers like that.
