A woman was stopped at the Yeager Airport (Charleston, WV) with plastic bottles after bomb-sniffing dogs reacted to her. Will her reported Pakistani ancestry figure into this? Will this turn out to be something well short of terrorism as the recent Boston incident did? That’s my bet (and hope).

First mistake (more to come, no doubt): this is at Tri-State Airport (Huntington, WV) not Yeager (Charleston, WV). The woman apparently lives in Huntington, WV.

Do we know what substances, if any, could cause a false positive in these tests? I’m wondering what the other potential explanations are if this doesn’t turn out to be a lone psycho situation.

WV Senator Robert Byrd’s office sent out this statement late Thursday afternoon.

“This is proof positive that it doesn’t pay to scrimp on homeland security in rural areas. We must not discount an airport or a chemical plant just because it happens to be in a rural state. Fortunately, it appears that an event with potential for serious consequences and calamity has been thwarted…"

WV’s Senator hard at work, trying to squeeze more DHS funds his way. When it turns out it really was Beggin’ Strips, like any good blowhard, he will shift the direction and meaning of his comments.

The trace analyzers detect minute amounts of explosive material. But they can also give positive readings on items that have come in contact with fertilizer, recently dry-cleaned clothes, and even hot dogs – anything with nitrate compounds.

I just saw a state police spokesman interviewed. Tests on the actual contents are still being conducted. He said it would be an hour or two before results are available.

The woman has not been arrested but is still being questioned by the FBI, apparently still at the airport which remains closed.

The Charleston Gazette reports the airport is open and that the woman is not going to be charged.

Wild speculation…is it possible that traces of legitimate explosives could indeed be left on such an item? I’m thinking, for example, transferred from someone handling explosives in a mining environment? (It is West Virginia, after all)

Federal officials said they would have allowed a Barboursville woman to fly on Friday, a day after items in her carry-on luggage prompted officials to evacuate and shut down Tri-State Airport for more than nine hours.

Instead, Rima Qayyum, 28, drove to her parents’ home in Michigan, according to FBI Special Agent Jeff Killeen.

“Ultimately, it was her decision as to how she wanted to leave the Huntington area and travel. We can’t tell someone how they can travel,” he said.

On Tuesday police responded to a 911 call from Qayyum’s apartment after a woman called and was disconnected while crying on the telephone.

Upon police arrival, Qayyum “was observed crying uncontrollably as she sat on the floor,” the Barboursville police report said. “She reported that during an argument the accused [her husband] pushed her and smacked her in the face.”

A woman who identified herself as Qayyum’s older sister in Jackson, Mich., said the woman had led a troubled home life, and that was the reason she was going home to her parents.

Seems like this woman is having a very bad week. I hope things improve for her soon. The husband on the other hand, maybe he needs a little more scrutiny from various authorities. Not that I really think he’s a terrorist or anything - just for hurting his pregnant* wife.

*okay, not 100% sure about the pregnant part yet and the abuse allegations are just her allegations.
