Like a lot of us, I had 3 trips booked and paid for when the shit hit the fan. Cancelled all of them. Now we can travel, so rebooked 2 of them and saved about $800 which I have in vouchers. One of them was our annual music cruise, which had to change the dates just this weekend because of DeSantis B.S. Called to rebook the flight and was told I could not use the vouchers for the additional $400 charge, they’re only for new travel. Shit.
But the agent was telling me to be careful that the vouchers didn’t expire before their expiry date and mentioned that in order to keep them, I should (I think this what she said) I should book a ticket of about the value of the vouchers even though I had no plans to travel, then cancel the flight, and get a new voucher to extend the expiration dates of the vouchers. At least I think that’s what she said.
Does anyone know what she meant? We have travel planned in 2022, but not until November. And I don’t like the thought of losing the $800.
Most vouchers have an expiration date. If you don’t use them by that date, they disappear. However, if you buy a ticket with your voucher, and then cancel that trip, the clock resets and you have another 12-24 months (depending on the airline) to use the new voucher you get for trip #2. But definitely check with your airline to make sure it works like that before buying a ticket you know you’re going to cancel.
ALso, many airlines and other travel-related companies have, and maybe still are, extending the voucher cutoff past whatever date they were originally issued for.
The only way to know for sure is to call your airline with your voucher numbers in hand and ask. All else is guesswork. Perhaps expensive guesswork.
