Al Franken's new book "Giant of the Senate"

Not sure the fact that he won his election can be considered a spoiler

I think the part I found most heartening was the sincere interest he took in Native Americans. My wife, once upon a time, worked as a liaison between the Smithsonian and the Indian Affairs Committee and during the 2008 election mentioned that she wouldn’t vote for McCain for a bunch of reasons but she did appreciate that he was virtually the only senator who would bother holding meetings with Native American advocates or lobbyists. So Franken’s comments about how to get on the Indian Affairs Committee (“You just ask”) and description of it as a sort of purgatory that few senators cared about rang honest to me.

Be sure and check out the 4-hour documentary about the Grateful Dead A Long Strange Trip because Franken (who is a Deadhead of epic proportions) has some terrific interview moments and shows off his fluency with the band and its culture and legacy to impressive effect. I didn’t think I could like him any more than I did already, but I was proven wrong: It definitely adds another fun dimension to his personality.
