I folded them when I was a child, but as an adult, developed the skill (not sure what else to call it) to be able to “see” the joke without needing to do the folds.
The Fold-Ins were great, but I also liked his other work. He was pretty prolific, if you look at all he did. Rest well, Al; you deserve it.
I was a huge fan of Mad Magazine as a kid, and loved Jaffee’s work. He, Sergio Aragones, and Don Martin were my favorites. (I also loved Groo by Aragones.)
Jaffee didn’t retire until he was 99 years old. That’s dedication!
I don’t think I’ve read a Mad Magazine since the early 1990s. In the 80s, we had the Mad Magazine board game and I even saw their movie Up the Academy which was a terrible, terrible movie. It’s hard to believe Al was in his 70s the last time I picked up an issue of Mad.
I forgot what it was but I remember something making fun of Al Jaffee fold-ins going “You always instantly notice the clouds in the sky always look like people’s faces”
I was just thinking about that magic trick last night, and wondering if that was Al Jaffee. I don’t think you have to swap out the stone, just add some broken glass between the stone and your palm. And the punchline was something like “it’s really hard to get blood out of a stone, but it’s easy to get blood out of a magician”.
I had a subscription to MAD for a couple of years. I got some Super Special issues with extra stuff in them. Through the 60s either me or my brother tried to obtain every issue of MAD, and dad would grab them to read too. Jaffee and the gang were prophets.
