Thank you Duck Duck Goose. I saw this spefur’s about 20 minutes ago and didn’t have the energy to respond but I see you covered it perfectly.
I should be the poster boy for the preview button. That’s “spefur’s post.”
Not for nothing, but I was scarred for life by Al Roker once. Apparently, he was friends with someone at the parental’s yacht club.
So, I’m pushing the cart down the docks, laden with ice for the icebox. And I look up, and sunbathing on the deck of a boat is a giant, all but naked, Al Roker at eye level. The horror…
the horror…
This is the best series of typos I’ve seen in a long long time…

…and he just got married too, so it fits.
Why do you think you are the one who can make the judgment as to who is a candidate for surgery and who is not. Do you look down on people who have the surgery until they prove to you that they are worthy? I hate that the media have latched onto this story like it’s the “flavor of the month”. It makes people like me and Zoe have to prove to people like you that we’re not doing it because some celebrity says it’s the thing to do.
My surgeon says I’m a candidate. Let’s see if you agree: I’m over 100 lbs. overweight; I have back (bulging disk and inflamed facet joints) and hip problems which prevent me from walking enough to lose weight, much less work out anymore; I have painful gastric reflux; I can’t even stand in one spot for longer than 10 seconds without searing pain in my back. I can’t drive long distances without someone taking over after a half hour because I’m so uncomfortable and need to sit in the passenger seat and squirm around the whole time. I’ve tried to lose weight several times. When I was working out 4 days a week, I was successful, but even then, I can only lose a certain amount before I had to take Prednisone (steroid) again for a chronic illness. Since I’m no longer able to control my weight with exercise and have been unable to do simple things like do the shopping, go to craft fairs and amusement parks, bowl, and hike with my husband, I’ve decided to have this surgery. So, is it okay with you that I’m having surgery on January 20?
My point is this, why do you care if people have this surgery? You will never know their reasons unless they tell you. Just don’t jump to conclusions because you don’t see anything wrong with them (besides being overweight).
This isn’t meant to be snide, I’m just trying to help you understand that you don’t know why people have the surgery until you talk to them about it. If I sound snide, I’m sorry. I’m just sick of being judged.
Of course I don’t know. (And yes, you sound like a candidate, which is what I said in my post.)
But because of all the reasons I cited previously, I really hate seeing it played up in the media as a magic bullet for weight loss. Lots of doctors agree.
Then we are in total agreement…in the Pit, even.
I apologize if I sounded bitchy at all in my post. I’ve been really stressed thinking about this surgery and I’m always ready to defend my reasons for doing this–even to people who understand it.
I think it’s a wonderful idea. I’m glad to see there is finally a solution for people who haven’t had success with traditional dieting.
I have a friend who is around 5’7" and I would guess 250+ lbs. She’s got neck, back, and hip problems, which I would attribute to her weight. I don’t think she realizes the correlation between her hip and her weight. I think she’ll have to have the hip replaced regardless of her weight issues. Would she be a candidate for surgery?
Without knowing your friend and her medical history, it’s hard to say. If you think she’s over that, then, she’s probably a candidate. Someone is a candidate for this surgery if they are 100 lbs. overweight and have a BMI of at least 40. You say your friend is 5’7" and 250 lbs.–her BMI would be 39.2, but even with a BMI of under 40, you can still have surgery if you have weight related health problems.
My doctor said that my orthopedic problems, alone (not to mention my other problems) make me a good candidate.
But, this is a last ditch effort for me. If I was able to work out like I used to, I wouldn’t be doing this, since it takes more than just dieting for me to lose weight. With my back and hip problems, I lost a very valuable tool to fight fat. So, I feel this is my last chance. Plus, I know I’m headed for 300 pounds in about 10 years from now, if I don’t do it. My mother wishes it was available when she was my age. She feels like she would’ve gotten more out of life if she was younger when she had it done.
I wish your friend good luck and hope she finds the solution she’s looking for.
Ask a doctor. The information you’ve given isn’t nearly enough to allow an informed professional to make that determination, let alone strangers on a message board.
Excuse me all, I was being bichy with my snide comment.
Nasty nasty, dirty Zoot, I must be punished, Fistt eh spaniking then the oral sex.
Merry You-Know-What everyone.
