I would have expected Zombie Frank Zappa.
Had I thought about it a moment longer, I would’ve said Dee Snyder.
Oops. Sorry, wrong forum. While I respect you, I do not love you.

I sense a John Edwards style scandal to brew up.
You just heard about this?
We have a thread about it from about 10 hours ago.
Duplicate thread.
I’ve merged this thread into the original. And I think your scandal sense is way off. Other than being carbon based, Al Gore and John Edwards don’t have much in common.
I never liked Tipsy. That whole PMRC thing bugged the hell out of me.
I never really cared for either of them much, but this news just saddens me. And I’m dreading the inevitable possibility of third party involvement. Why couldn’t they be different? I have no idea why this story has depressed me all day, but it has. Maybe there can be a reconciliation.
Of course, on another forum, someone mentioned the Oscar curse…
I’m surprised because of the 40 year thing. They never struck me as a couple that stayed together for political purposes even though they were unhappy. Still, I admit I know little about them.
Seriously, you guys are shocked about this? Tipper is basically a card-carrying Repuglican. Al is 99.9% hippie. The dude hugged trees so hard they shat out the Nobel Prize.
Seriously, I am rather surprised by this. I thought for sure that Bill and Hil would pack it in before Al and Tip.
Bill and Hillary are a political (and secondarily, money-grubbing) team, not a couple.
Doesn’t have to be political purposes. He’s been out of electoral politics for a decade now. It does happen sometimes that a longtime couple separates later in life. It doesn’t mean their marriage was just for appearances or whatever.
I remember Dave Barry also described the famous 2000 DNC kiss as “Al apparently implanting an egg sac in Tipper’s head.”
Maybe this is getting off-topic, but I read something years ago that mentioned Tipper’s fight with clinical depression and suggested that Al caused it or was responsible for it in some way (by working a lot, being away from the family, whatever). Bwuh? I thought clinical depression didn’t work that way – that it came from within – that you could be living in perfectly happy circumstances and still be depressed. I thought, where did that come from? Why are you trying to tag him as the cause of her problem?
I’m really not trying to hijack this into a discussion of clinical depression, though. I just wonder if she’s still having problems and this contributed to their “growing apart.”
Some TV star (Mary Tyler Moore, or someone of that generation) got divorced years ago and said something very candid about how the no-divorce standard came from a time when people didn’t live as long and had much lower expectations of happiness than we do today.
I hope Al and Tipper find happiness. It is really a shame. I really do believe they were very much in love at one time.
Think about it this way–there are two kinds of depression:
- Regular/exogenous depression, which is caused by something that happened or some situation in your life.
- Clinical/endogenous depression, which is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain.
Even if someone is suffering from clinical depression, that does not mean that they’re immune from events that ordinary people would get depressed about. People with clinical depression can react differently more strongly to ordinary depressing events than regular people might. One of the ways that this extra depression can manifest itself is by making it extremely hard to do the things needed to fight the depression. (Sucks, doesn’t it?)
So while Al couldn’t have caused Tipper’s chemical imbalance, he could well have done things to exacerbate her depression and/or make it more difficult for her to do what she needed to do to combat it and/or help her to fight it.
A hypothetical example of this might be–Her public duties and extra family responsibilities because of being a political wife interfered with maintaining a regular schedule of therapy. Maybe Al could have made it easier for her to do this. (Again, I just made the above example up for illustrative purposes)
Odd. I’m no fan of Al Gore and never have been. But I find this sad.
Can’t explain it.
Makes you wonder if she got tired of his global warming scam and kicked his ass to the curb.
Maybe she wouldn’t let him into her lockbox.
AL; “Tipper, how can the world be getting so much warmer while you’re getting so much colder?”
