Albums that take their title from a line in a song thereon (but not the title!)

All of Alanis’ albums are named in this way.

“Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie” is from the song “So Pure” and
“Under Rug Swept” is from the song “Hands Clean”.

Alanis is who I thought of when I saw the thread title. She’s the only one I can think of who does this consistently. I think it’s a neat way to name an album and I tend to notice it, but I can’t think of any more right now, darnit.

Oh, Dave Matthews Band’s “Under the Table and Dreaming” is from “Ants Marching”.

Pocket Full of Kryptonite, Spin Doctors. From Jimmy Olsen’s Blues.

Steely Dan’s Katy Lied takes its name from a line in the song “Doctor Wu”.

Rush- Counterparts is from ‘Animate’.

Rush - Hold Your Fire is from ‘Mission’.

Sting - Nothing Like the Sun is from ‘Sister Moon’ (and Shakespeare)

Cornershop - Handcream for a Generation is from (IIRC) ‘Motion the 11’.

Soul Asylum - Grave Dancers Union is from (IIRC) ‘Without A Trace’

Sweet - Desolation Boulevard is on (IIRC) Sweet FA.

Big Boi from Outkast’s disk Speakerboxxx has no track called “Speakerboxxx” but the word recurs throughout the album, esp. the Intro.

I’m ashamed I know this but the title of Britney Spears’ album “In the Zone” is a line from her song “Me Against the Music.”
Don’t look at me.

Happy

Emmylou Harris’s album **Quarter Moon In a Ten Cent Town ** takes its title from a line in the song, Easy From Now On.

Some more Pink Floyd ones.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason - From a line in One Slip.
The Wall - There is no one song called “The Wall” but plenty of lyrics that mention “the wall”.
The Division Bell - From a line in High Hopes

Tom Waits’ Nighthawks At The Diner is the opening line of Eggs And Sausage.
Paul McCartney’s Flowers In The Dirt is a line from That Day Is Done.
Golden Earring’s Moontan is a from a line in Vanilla Queen.
Max Webster’s Universal Juveniles is a refrain in Chalkers.

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

There was a persistent belief that XTC named their albums from lyrics from the album’s immediate predecessor. The song “Ballad for a Rainy Day” on Skylarking contained the line “Orange and lemon raincoats roll and tumble together;” the next album was titled Oranges and Lemons. That album, in turn, included the song “Chalkhills and Children” which had the line, “while some nonsuch net holds me aloft.” The next album title? Nonsuch. (No, my username is not a coincidence.)

Andy Partridge insisted these were happenstance, but when it came time to name the follow-up to Nonsuch, Partridge consciously went back to that album’s lyrics for inspiration. He settled on Apple Venus, a phrase from “Then She Appeared.”

The next album was called Wasp Star, effectively breaking the pattern. Oh well.

**Dire Straits’ ** album “Making Movies” comes from a line in the song "Skate Away."

Shriekback’s Big Night Music comes from the song Sticky Jazz

Alice Cooper ~ Love It To Death ~ From the song Long Way To Go
Raise Your Fist and Yell ~ From Freedom

Everything else I can come up with offhand has been mentioned, I think.

One of my favourite albums:

Selling England by the pound (Genesis) takes its title from the song Dancing with the moonlit knight.

The Corrs did it twice (that I know of):
‘Talk on Corners’ was a lyric from ‘Queen of Hollywood’ and
‘In Blue’ was a lyric from ‘Give Me A Reason’

Simon and Garfunkel: Parsely, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme (from the song “Scarborough Fair”)

Wow…it seems I’m the first one to mention Sade’s Diamond Life, which comes from a line in “Smooth Operator”.

The Cure’s The Head on the Door is a line from the song “Close To Me.”

Also, their singles compilation Standing on a Beach is the first line from the song “Killing an Arab.” The corresponding video compilation, Staring at the Sea, is the second line from that same song.

The Talking Heads concert film/album “Stop Making Sense” from the song “Girlfriend is Better”.

I think the title of the Doors third album, “Waiting for the Sun”, is from a song that isn’t even on the album. I’ll check it out.

wow, the first thing that came to mind when i saw the thread title was the pixies debut album, come on pilgrim, which is from the song “levitate me”, and it seems no one has mentioned it yet.
