Aldi: tell me what to try there

Just wanted to mention something new that I bought on my last Aldi trip. I see that they’re now selling a frozen deep-dish pizza under the Mama Cozzi’s label. They only have two kinds: cheese, and uncured pepperoni and sausage. I picked up the pepperoni and sausage one and we tried it last night. It’s really very good and bakes nicely. It’s only a 9" pizza, but it makes for a very good meal for 3-4 people if you have a salad to go with it. Our local Aldi stores carry it for $4.99 and it’s worth your while to give it a shot.

I’ve been tempted to try these because they seem relatively inexpensive. I’m not a seafood person in general, but I may have to give these a shot.

Thanks!

9" pizza for 3-4 people!? Don’t invite me! I could eat most of that myself and I’m not a large person.

Picked up another order from there yesterday. I’ve been on a steel-cut oatmeal kick, and they have by far the best price around here that I have found for anywhere that does curbside pickup. Costco lately has only been selling quick-cooking steel cut-oatmeal, and then what’s the point? Also some golden raisins.

I do wish I knew how it was possible to actually acquire some of the higher-end proteins. We did manage to snag some scallops once, but have yet to manage a boneless leg of lamb or duck breast. They always seem to be unavailable.

Well, my wife and I each ate half of the pizza and felt a little miserable afterwards, so that’s why I was thinking that the next time around I would have a salad to go along with a smaller portion of pizza. This also means leftovers for lunch the next day, too.

PS: Going to Aldi today to get a couple more of those pizzas and (hopefully) more of the whole milk yogurt that’s been scarce for the past week or so.

I wasn’t a fan of the deep-dish pizza. Seemed like too much oregano in the tomato sauce.

I wonder who makes it for them.

Maybe you should pass on the salad dressings. I noticed this statement on the necks of the bottles: “NO CERTIFIED SYNTHETIC COLORS”. :slightly_smiling_face

Was it the Gino’s East one? It’s been ok but not a must-have. I’m curious to try the newer pan pizza (incorrectly identified as deep dish in the title):

This is what I saw at my Aldi and I did not buy it. Very small and did not look that great. I’m curious if other Aldis have other kinds.

Sorry, it isn’t clear whether you got the one in the photo or the Ginos’ East described in the text. Can you clear it up?

The Gino’s one is fine and I haven’t tried the Giacobbino’s one yet.

Giacobbino is what I saw at my Aldi.

It was Aldi’s new house brand deep-dish pizza. Probably used the Mama Cozzi brand.

I don’t think I’ve ever had Gino’s East pizza, so I can’t say if it was their recipe. I presumed that one of the firms who make take-and-bake deep-dish sold in other Chicago supermarkets were making this one for Aldi.

I’ve never seen any pizza branded Gino’s East or Giacobbino’s at Aldi in Chicago. I’ve never heard of Giacobbino’s at all. Looks like it’s a new supermarket brand from Connie’s Pizza, so the new Aldi offering might be theirs.

It’s this one. (Ruler added to show size.)

Like I said, it’s a 1-2 person pizza, depending on how hungry you are or if you’re serving it up with something else.

I finally had the Red Bag Chicken. It’s…ok. I also have the green bag chicken which seems better. GBC is called “parmesan herb tenders” and RBC is “chicken breast fillets.” The tenders are bigger and, IMHO, better seasoned.

That deep dish pizza must be, well, deep, 9 inches across and over a pound and a half. Waaay more than I could go through at one sitting.

Green bag chicken? I…must now find it.

The first time my wife and I had one of these, we each ate half in one sitting and felt miserable afterwards. Having a quarter of the pizza each along with a modest side salad was way better for us, plus it gave us leftovers for lunch the next day.

We like the red bag chicken just fine, but I’ve been tempted to try the green bag tenders. Not a huge fan of parmesan, but the price is cheap enough for me to give them a shot.

I came across this video on the Aldi subreddit. It explains some information about what to look for on the shelf price signs.
