I remember reading about the Trieste in National Geographic. The part the had people inside is the little sphere on the bottom. The big part on top is just a huge tank for buoyancy. It was filled with gasoline if memory serves. The ship is much like a dirigible, but operates underwater instead of in the air.

I was going to make my own thread, but I forget: my marine biology textbook says… something that contradicts “Once, in 1960…”. Unfortunately, I can’t find it now.
