Does anyone know what is happening with them? What is holding up their next album… I would love to see that! any details, please share… thanks!
Hmmm the last i had heard, which was about 2 years ago or so, was that they broke up. If they got back together that’s news to me. I was able to attend a concert in NJ which featured Metallica and another band and the lead singer from Alice. At least i think it was him, i went just for Metallica.
Anyway, i think the deal was that since he wrote most of the songs he was entitled to do them live or some such crap. As for where they stand right now, i really have no idea. If they got back together great! If not, oh well, another band bites the dust.
I’m not sure but I think that the boxed set, Music Bank was their last gasp. If you don’t have it you should get it, it has remixes and previously unreleased stuff. OTOH, in the past, due to Layne’s little problem with the smack, their albums haven’t exactly come out in a timely manner, so maybe there is hope. I know that I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
There’s never been any formal breakup, so I suspect something new may be coming along sooner or later.
I’m sure it will be worth the wait. Their new stuff on their boxed set is great.
It would nice to see them show that half-dozen or so young whippersnapper bands that have completely ripped off their sound how it’s really done.
I think its safe to assume that Alice is done and that Unplugged is the most recent “new” stuff. But if you’re interested, Layne heads a band on the Faculty soundtrack and Jerry Cantrell did a cover of Tuesday’s Gone with some of the guys on Metallica’s Garage, Inc.
You, apparently, haven’t heard the song “Get Born Again” off their greatest hits CD, then?
You should. It’s an awesome song.
Actually “Get Born Again” from the box set was done years earlier for the Singles soundtrack. They went with Would? and didn’t release Born Again till now.
[Johnny Carson] I did not know that. [/Johnny Carson]
Still, I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of them say they were absolutely, positively no more. I’m hoping they’ll get their act together - literally and figuratively - and crank out some new material.
I’ve heard all of their solo and other projects, and it’s like there’s something missing. We need AiC!
I couldn’t agree more. The box set is fantastic, the unplugged album is one of the best, if not THE. And you’re right I haven’t heard any “official” announcement, a la Pumpkins, but its been a few years since any real, new material. Hopefully they’re in the basement, working on something good.
(HIJACK)
I got to meet Alice In Chains when they came here with Van Halen, nice group of guys, if a little bizarre. This was way back. I still have the backstage pass if you are in to collecting stuff like that Chief.
I have to disagree with Milo, Jerry Cantrell’s solo album was pretty good. As was Layne’s side project Mad Season, with a bunch of guys he met in re-hab.
Has anyone here actually seen them live? I’d probably give up a testicle to see them in person.
Also, I think that brandocet is correct. The Alice in Chains unplugged was the best one.
That is cool Poysyn, I have some bootleg AIC albums and a bunch of other ummmm…collectibles I guess you could say.
Mad Season is one of my all time favorite albums. I don’t think that those guys met in re-hab, though. I thought it was just one of those not-so-supergroup collaborations. The guitarist was from Pearl Jam and the drummer was from Screaming Trees. While it certainly is not unreasonable to believe that members of prominent Seattle grunge bands would all be in re-hab at the same time, I find it easier to believe that they all decided to jam together and see what happens.
I also hope that we haven’t heard the last from Alice In Chains. I would love to see them live, and have not yet had the opportunity to do so.
I don’t own it, but there is a live Mad Season album from the one show they did (there is also a video of the performance). I also liked the solo Jerry album, it was a little different but check out some of the tracks with Les Claypool of Primus on bass; really cool. Oh and I think adam yax was kidding about the rehab thing as I doubt Layne has ever been in rehab.
Wasn’t there some new material on the box set? i read that they did record some new stuff in 98… but for some reason they didn’t do an album
layne also did some vocals for class of 1999, the cover of pink floyd’s another brick in the wall.
Poysyn, thats great that you got to meet them, it must have been an awesome show!
well so far it seems like they are still on hiatus…
no official breakup announcements and the text in the booklet for the box set also makes it seem like they haven’t broke up.
i just wish we could get some real news…!
There was material on the box set that was not previously released, so I guess you could call it “new”. As I said, I have some bootleg CDs that contain live versions of pretty much everything, including a lot of the prev.unrel. stuff. I’m glad to see that there is still at least some interest in AIC, I’ve felt like I was it…
i heard on a local radio station a couple months ago that AIC has officially broken up. i don´t remember where they said they got the information, but i´ll tkae thier word for it. hope i´m wrong but i don´t think i am.
so then they really didn’t go into the studio in 1998? hmm, strange.
yes i am a huge fan and i know several others who are too… i just saw the unplugged video recently and it was amazing!!
i saw jerry cantrell on his solo tour with metallica and it was pretty fun since he played a few songs but definitely not the same.
do you know anything about his 2nd solo album?
I hadn’t heard about any official break-up but I always got the impression that AIC played it loosely: they’ll be a band whenever the four guys all felt like getting together to play. When they’re not together…call it a hiatus.
I personally don’t expect to hear anything new from them — just like I didn’t expect Unplugged or Music Bank. In the meantime, I’m resorting to solo projects, soundtrack supergroups and sound-alike knock-offs (Godsmack, Days of the New) to get my lonely Alice fix.
