Wow, that’s incredible, thanks for sharing. Layne’s voice sounded awesome on that. Still gives me chills.
Thank you for sharing. Great to see them before they were famous.
My first exposure to AIC was at an old Skate King skating rink a town about 40 minutes south of Seattle playing in a battle of the bands. Lane was in drag with what was at the time the biggest mohawk I had ever seen. They played Queen of the rodeo. I actually saw them at that venue twice, the second time Mother Love Bone played as well.
Great band, Dark as night, Brutal as a boot to the head, and as was already posted they were metal not grunge.
I had an appropriately tragic story about missing a pre-Dirt-era show while on vacation in Florida, but concert tour chronologies can’t confirm the dates. Maybe fuzzy memories…
The pic is awesome but the story?
Absolutely, but haven’t heard all of their discography or albums. Still listen to “Would” whenever shit in life goes sour. Cliche, but it offers comfort knowing someone out there has a bad time too and that maybe it will get better.
It proffers the pretense of “Better” while it delivers hell.
I decided to shore up my Alice in Chains catalog with the new stuff (via Apple Music, so it’s “free”). I’ve listened to most of The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here but not yet any of the other one, and so far Jerry Cantrell continues to not disappoint. They have taken the filthy, sludgy sound that was always underlying all of their music, but fully embraced it, and I like the new singer. He’s not Layne Staley, but he’s not to be trying to do a Layne Staley impression either, and that’s a good thing. Overall I’m enjoying the new stuff. It’s definitely different, but it’s still very much AIC.
That album would probably be in my all-time top 5, although it’s not an easy listen.
I had that cranked up out in the desert yesterday. Lifeless Dead was echoing off the hillsides. Fuckin’ great!
Keeps the coyotes away, too.
Amazingly, I saw them in concert many years ago - I was thrilled also to get all access and meet the band as soon as they left the stage.
Jerry Cantrell is also a very nice person, quiet, especially when compared to the others in the band. The drummer, Sean (If I remember right), had been quite offended the night before when Suzi and Diana (two of the older girls in our little group) had burst out laughing when he emerged from his hotel room bathroom naked. They explained later it may not have been laughable if he had given a hint that he was planning to strip.
Sitting front row at the concert, Mike sent one of the security guys over with a pass and instructions to “come back stage right after the show”. I was hopelessly naive and assumed he was interested in my older friends. At 14, I was far too young (in my own opinion) to accept the offer of “a walk” offered by Mike Starr, even though I found him “super hot”. I am sure the story would have taken a dramatic turn if I had said yes.
My memory of Layne was asking me if I had “anything on me” and watching he and a woman (I think his girlfriend) rampage through the backstage on a motorized wheelchair/scooter.
That was such a weird time in my life.
Interesting this thread came up for me today. I woke up this morning with “Wake Up” in my head, so by the time I got to work, I did a full-on AIC/Mad Season jam via earbuds. Love them both dearly and both bands are my favorites to pole dance to.
Faves include
Nutshell
Rotten Apple
Got Me Wrong (unplugged)
Rain When I Die
and Mad Season’s Artificial Red
You pole dance to Alice In Chains? Interesting.
