(No, I’m kidding. Really. Good for you, that’s awesome news. ;))

Congrats on the results Sunrazor, theyre excellant.

Coiunt me in as another one who says B means drops out, of course things are done differently here, but here, the tope marks are rare - not because were thick or anything, they just dont happen all that often!

You may think it odd Tio Gringo, but it’s the standard pattern for semesters at Australian universities. Academic years coincide with calendar years. First semester starts around the end of February and runs until exam time at the end of June. Second semester starts around the end of July and runs until exam time at the end of November/beginning of December. The long university summer holidays are over December and January. It’s the northern hemisphere system of academic years straddling different calendar years that has always seemed odd to me.

No offense intended, but, for me anyway, it seems a strange system. We don’t straddle calendar years though. We have a “Spring” semester that runs from January until May, a “Fall” semester that runs from August/September to December, and a shorter, but more intensive “Summer” session. Each “long” semester runs about 16 weeks and the summer semesters run from 5 to 8 weeks in length.

If I am reading your post right, in Australia you only have two semesters? How many weeks is each semester?

That’s basically how Korea works too - spring semester, March-June; fall semester, Sept-December. We have really long breaks, I guess: June-August and December-Feb (5 months of the year).

The university I go to now (for my MA) has a t-shirt that says, “If I wanted As, I would have gone to Harvard.” (Of course, my personal favorite is: “If it were easy, it’d be your mom.”)

 Where do you go, HazelNutCoffee? And, if I can ask, what are you majoring in?

My mistake. So when does the academic year start? I’ve always been told that in the US it starts in September.

Most unis have two semesters, each lasting about 12-13 weeks of classes and perhaps 1-2 weeks of mid-semester holidays. Some also run a smaller scale series of summer classes over the January break. Some faculties operate on a three trimester basis rather than a two semester basis.

If I may step in here, I think that Tio misunderstood: our semesters don’t straddle calendar years, but our academic years certainly do – as Cunctator stated. And yes, in general the academic year runs September to June, +/- a month or two depending on the school (for example, my university starts the first semester in late August and ends the second semester in mid-May). There is often a short summer semester available, as Tio said, and sometimes even a shorter winter semester, but I’ll go out on a limb and say that the majority of students only attend in the fall and spring.

I’m finishing an MA in Humanities (focus on English Literature) at the University of Chicago. “Where fun comes to die.” :: cue ominous music ::

If I’m reading things right, it looks like the US and Australian systems are essentially identical, the difference being when summer is.

Finished my third semester back in school (I am so glad I decided to go back!!) and have held onto my 4.0 solidly all three semesters. Yay! My history professor actually came to me and asked me to write up something about how I study and take notes and so on, so she could use it for future students. I did so and she showed it to the history department faculty, and they’re considering putting it on the department’s webpage.

That’s exactly right. The good Cunctator was discussing apples while I thought he was discussing bananas with their handy, god-given, pull tabs.

Plus, it didn’t help that I was quite lit last night. No more drunk posting for Tio!

What’s that? brag about grades?
love to as I’m high on the success of my recently discovered grades.

After graduating with a perfect 4.0 from my undergraduate degree…

I just finished my first year of law school and landed myself on the Dean’s List and got the highest marks in my first year class in Criminal (A+!!) and Contracts (A).
