"All Carrot, No Stick."

I’m so excited! I finished a song today, and it rocks! It’s called, “All Carrot, No Stick.”

I made myself a little MySpace musician page (hey, why not?) and I have my allotment of 10 songs up. I love all of them, but this one is special. It’s the consummate achievement of my attempt to work with the cheesiest built-in synthesizer bank known to man.

Sure, I could use that there fancy equipment real musicians have… but this is more of a challenge. Tee hee.

If anyone feels like putting on some headphones and turning it up loud, here’s the URL:

That is all.

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Whoops, thanks.

I went in expecting radio-style music (when you said ‘song’, I expected words), so there was a moment of confusion, but then… I really liked this! I’ve just got your stuff in the background at the moment (it’s auto-cycling through your works) and I’m enjoying it.

It’s got a kind of old-style computer-gamey feel to it. I want to load up some games and get playing!

I like it! Catchy…

Why, thanks!

As a matter of fact, I had game music in mind when writing some of the other ones. I had a few hours of panic while at work recently; I got a sudden fear that “Ruthless Gambol” might have been an accidental plagiarization of the endgame music from “American McGee’s Alice,” which tune I could not quite remember at the time. Much to my relief, when I got home & checked it, they were different.

(heh. the ads at bottom are for “aroma stick” and “bulk bully stick.” …what, no rhythm stick?)

So, what did you use? Is it some 8-bit video game soundset?

Practically. I used Anvil Studio, which utterly rocks; it’s a program for composing music, with sheet music and a whole big selection of instrument sounds you can use. However, the actual sounds themselves when you play it back are generated by whatever synthesizer bank came with your motherboard/soundcard or whatever you may have added on.

So basically, I made all these tunes with my computer and a mouse. But I have some very klunky hardware, so what I have to work with is majorly limited. I wanted to see if I could make it produce a good song anyway – sort of like writing a poem within a strict prescribed structure, or painting with only two colors. Or something.
