Just wondering why? Obviously some of the islands in James Bay are much closer to Ontario and Quebec. How did this come about?
Actually it should be Nunavut not Nunavik can someone fix that?
This breakdown of Canada’s historical provincial and territorial structure may be of help. Note particularly what is said for October 1895, and the accompanying map. Although mainland Keewatin would be cut off at the 60th parallel in ten years, the placement of the Hudson and James Bay islands made perfect sense at the time it was done. And remember that Keewatin remained in existence until 1999.
Thanks for the map, and it makes sense at the time, but when they were taking away mainland territory from the NW Territory and Keewatin you think they would’ve taken away the islands.
Though from what I read, none are inhabited anyway
The town of Sanikiluaq, population 744, is located on Flaherty Island (one of the Belcher Islands.) Not sure about the others, though it appears that Akimiski Island (the big one in James Bay) is in fact uninhabited.
