I know how to look at the big picture, but many don’t. “Less taxes for me = better. 1.5 trillion? So what? Obama doubled the deficit and nobody complained”

Again, an intelligent conversation about the tax cut can be had, along with some other issues, but without some compassion from the people you are arguing with, they are not going to see how cutting CHIP to make sure private airplane owners get a tax break is bad. Compassion, that if it exists, may disappear when they start being told they are “too stupid to know any better”

But the point is, educated people writing to the Times should be the ones who are looking at the bigger picture. It’s disappointing that they’re not.

Thank you for once again making my point. I expect this kind of *stupidity *(tip of the hat to manson1972) from Faux News watchers, but not from Times readers. Very disturbing.

Yesterday the Times printed letters from disillusioned thump supporters, but there were only two. <shrug> Not sure how to interpret that.

Today there were letterscommenting on the decision of the paper to print the pro-thump comments, some for it, some agin. Here’s one:

As one who does think of President Trump’s supporters as among the “deplorables” — people who are racist and xenophobic, people who fear the world, people who blame others for all their challenges and woes, people who hate the very idea of government as a force for good — I was fascinated to read the letters from Trump voters.

I thought it was a wise and striking decision on The Times’s part to run them in its own editorial board’s space. Indeed, that’s the space they deserved to maximize their impact.

Thanks to these letters, I do have a better understanding now of what these writers see happening under Mr. Trump: an end to pussyfooted, mealy-mouthed weakness and to regulatory overreach; a return to forcefulness and certainty on the world stage and unleashed optimism at home.

But then I stop and think about what it is they’re really so happy about: reckless threats and pointless insults passing for diplomacy; a rejection of fact, science and even the notions of decency, humanity and justice; a litany of lies and myths as the foundation of policy; and historic levels of incompetence and self-dealing across the agencies of government from the White House on down.

Mr. Trump’s more educated supporters don’t seem to see the primordial muck on which everything Trumpian is based.

That’s one way to look at it. Here’s another:

Well, it is kind of hard to argue with “I think Trump is doing a great job because the DJIA just hit 26,000 for the first time ever”

You could start by asking what exactly Trump did to cause this, (not a thing). Then you could point out what his predecessor did to get the economy back on track, after a near-disaster, and the rise that followed.

You know damn well that if the economy was tanking, they’d be giving all of the credit to Obama. They blamed Obama for the melt-down that occurred during G.W.’s administration, (when they weren’t blaming Clinton). The fact is, the Right is happy to manipulate the truth, and their voters are happy to lap it up.
