Years upon years ago, ATI sucked. They had lousy graphics cards and even lousier drivers and yet even lousier service. I avoided them like the plague and practically spent my nights jacking off while browsing Nvidia’s webpage.
Then they started to bitch-whomp Nvidia in the performance department. “That’s all right, Nvidia’ll catch up,” said I. “They still have a better reputation and software… this’ll pass.”
Months passed. Most benchmarks showed Nvidia just a step or two behind ATI. “That’s all right,” said I. “They’re close enough, and their Detonator drivers are top-notch.”
More months passed. Nvidia never caught up. Even their new FX line was plagued with problems for a while, at least with their flagship 5800. “That’s all right, they’ll fix it,” said I. And they did, with the 5900.
Then there were the Catalyst drivers for ATI cards. Pretty damn good, especially considering the tripe that they had on the table before. “Hmm… that’s one less strike against them.”
Then terror struck my heart: Nvidia was HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE at rendering Half-Life 2 in general, and DX9 games in particular. “No! That’s not true! That’s impossible!” I screamed in my best Mark Hamill impression. “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!” And then I jumped into a bottomless shaft…
Then I found out that ATI had won the bid to develop the graphics for the Xbox2. That raised my opinion of them greatly, in my eyes.
But I held firm. “Half-Life 2 isn’t out for another eight months. I’ll wait, see what Nvidia can bring to the fold.” I wasn’t disappointed about an updated graphics card release… the FX 5700 and 5950, to be exact. Better than the previous batch… but still not enough.
But, even after all that, I held firm. “Nvidia will come through,” I chanted, praying before my altar of GeForces, “Nvidia will show us the light.”
But now the camel’s back as been broken: I just read through the Tom’s Hardware Reader’s Choice awards, and ATI just steamrolled right over… well… everyone. Best Innovation in Graphics, Best Graphics Card Manufacturer…
So that’s it. I give in. I surrender. I’ll turn in my key to the GeForce Wankroom. I’ll turn my back on my memories with my old, trusty GeForce2 MX-400 as well as my current GeForce4 Ti4600. Come this Christmas, I’m writing down “ATI Radeon 9700” on my gift list… and may Nvidia have mercy on my soul…
