I settled in to watch my new Silence of the Lambs Special Edition DVD last night and was immediately struck dumb.
This is a DVD … those are all letterbox, right?
:turn lights on:
:look at DVD case:
So I get up this morning and check out IMDb. The DVD details screen there claims it’s in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. I’ve got news [sub]and a knuckle sandwich[/sub] for them.
I’m gonna pay a visit to Best Buy and see if maybe there’s a different edition that really is in widescreen, but for now I’m feeling a little like I’ve had a rectal.
Several of my most recent DVD purchases have different versions on each side of a single disc- widescreen on one side, regular on the other.
Try flipping the disc over. If not, go ahead and serve that knuckle sandwich to the first Best Buy employee you see. Doesn’t matter which one, they all deserve it.
I know that Best Buy as of last year had a letterbox version, 'cause I watched it with a freind and that’s where he claimed he’d bought it.
IMDB seemes to drop the ball on stuff like this sometimes, though. When I saw the OP, I thought it was referring to Kurt Cobain’s page there.
Go there and you’ll see what I’m talking about…
Oh, okay. In the place where people’s pictures generally are, there’s a little graphic saying “No Headshot”.
Yep, Mikahw, I just confirmed that at Amazon. Which leaves me relieved and somewhat hopeful that I’ll be able to exchange my “Special Edition” for the “Widescreen Special Edition” when I visit Best Buy.
I just checked Cobain’s page and it says, “No Photo Available”. I know you were cracking a joke, but I thought it would AT LEAST say what you said it would say!
And there’s no rule that says DVDs have to be widescreen. I wish there was, but the only thing you can do now is check and make sure the disc you’re buying has Widescreen.
I belive that most of data at the IMDb comes from those in the movie industry with some additional info from the general public (such as myself). IMDb staffers check all submissions but mistakes do get through on occasion, such as the nonexistant Gilligan’s Island movie that had been listed as being in production. There was even a projected relasese date, can’t remember the year but the date was 1 January. I relayed a quote from Brian Dennehy, who was listed as having been cast as Skipper Jonas Grumby, that this movie “has not been nor ever will be made.” The IMDb pulled the listing for that movie shortly thereafter. I like to think I had something to do with that.
Not to question your decision to buy from Best Buy, but you should try to pick up the Criterion version. However, their site says that it is out of print.
Some people also put themselves and friends into the actors database for fun. Barbara Mikkelson, co-owner of Snopes, is “credited” as a curling instuctor in Help!
