Premium steel cut oat brands like Red Mill can be pricey in the grocery store. Do generic health food store bulk steel cut oats or less expensive brands compare?
I’d like to know this, too. I like McCann’s, but they’re expensive and we don’t use up that big canful fast enough. I just had the last third of a can go rancid and had to toss it. Though I would have refrigerated it if I had thought ahead.
I used to use McCann’s, but switched to bulk oats because they’re so much cheaper. They taste the same to me. Unfortunately, the store got rid of its bulk bins. I still have a can of McCann’s though. (We haven’t had porridge in quite a long time. The SO likes my cooked breakfasts, and I prefer salty to sweet anyway.)
McCann’s and Bob’s Red Mill are SLIGHTLY different; the individual oat bits are slightly different sizes. They also suggest slightly different water:oat ratios, no idea if that’s due to the size difference or just a different recipe.
I now buy Red Mill because there’s a store near me that sells it cheap, but dump it into a McCann’s tin because it looks nicer.
