The same year as Apocalypse Now, it won twice as many Oscars as the Coppola and deserved every one (though K vs. K took the big prizes).

Which is a scandal in itself. No way K vs. K deserved that.
ATJ is one of the five best films ever, and I think Fosse is one of the most brilliant directors ever. Cabaret might feel a little stale, due to LM and having heard the title song a gazillion times, but as a movie, it’s also very, very good. I think his style as directors is linked to him being a dancer and choreographer. He let the camera participate in the action, almost as a character in itself. It moves like an invisible onlooker would move around a room to check out different things. To bad his last movie was Star80.

And having his gf audition makes perfect sense. If David Mamet did the same, we wouldn’t have to sit through the crappy acting of Rebecca Pidgeon, which spoils all his work for me nowadays.

Well I say I’m rather pleased that Fosse decided to be a hardass about auditioning ALL the players – the result was a quite enjoyable experience…

Well, not “ALL the players”, as I remember Ben Vereen didn’t have to audition for the Ben Vereen part. I seem to remember Vereen saying it had been promised to him before pen was put to paper.

But Vereen in those days was, simply put, the best.

The same behavior that Woody Allen explored in his “artist as asshole” trilogy (Bullets over Broadway, Deconstructing Henry, and Sweet and Lowdown). Allen made the point that to create great art, you sometimes need to be cruel in your relations with others.

What would Woody Allen know about making art? He’s been trying for however many years now and hasn’t succeeded yet.
