I keep tripping over smart cards and smart card programmers on eBay - I’m generally aware that these smart cards consist of a credit-card sized piece of plastic containing a microprocessor and/or some flash/EEPROM memory; I’m also aware that they are used for things like entry systems, but what are all the folks that buy them on ebay using them for?
In some case, less-than-moral types are using them to get free programming from satellite TV systems.
A couple of years ago, the brainiacs at DirecTV started suing ANYONE who bought a smart card writer. They somehow got customer lists from dealers and sent them a letter demanding money. They apparently thought that the only reason people bought the writers was to create smart cards specifically to steal their satellite signal.
Rather arrogant on their part I would say.
