Allegations that Stephen Hawking was assualted?

According to this article, police are looking into allegations that Stephen Hawking was abused. Hawking, however, denies the allegations.

Police have said they hope to interview Hawking about allegations that he has been abused, and has suffered a string of injuries. Hawking has rejected the allegations.
‘‘I firmly and wholeheartedly reject the allegations that I have been assaulted,’’ Hawking said in a statement issued Jan. 23.

So what’s going on here?

The Daily Mirror newspaper reported in January that his three children were worried he was being harmed by someone suffering from Munchausen Syndrome by proxy, a disease where sufferers hurt others to draw attention to themselves.

Nursing staff alerted police last year after Hawking was left outside in his garden in the hot sun and suffered heatstroke and sunburn, the Mirror said.

Hawking has denied he has been abused and said he felt media reports about the injuries - including a broken wrist, gashes to the face and a cut lip - were an invasion of his privacy.

It looks like the accusations are directed against Hawking’s wife, as detailed in this article from The Australian. Whether or not the allegations are true, this is shaping up to be a very nasty battle.
